No - just too many years without being turned off, they just don't make things to last these days

I disable the 5GHz transmitter as it pumps out crap loads of heat. So much so that it burned out the first modem/router I had from my ISP.
Why run 5GHz, but for the one device that uses it and that can't when in the bedroom because of too many walls between it and the router? So, 2.4GHz is all I use.

I am on my fourth modem/router due to two lightning strikes in close proximity in my last flat, both of which managed to wipe out my LAN connections - but left 2.4GHz wifi and internet intact.

The Asus one I have barely gets warm with both 2.4GHz and 5GHz transmitting.

I had exactly that with an all-singing, all-dancing, modem/router/dual wifi branded "BT Home Hub 5A" - if the hub restarted for any reason, the LAN wouldn't reconnect, though the internet and the wifi would. And BT makes that hub reboot once a fortnight to check it can still negotiate the same ADSL speed. At 3 a.m.

After multiple phone calls, a factory replacement router, and home engineer visits - I re-contracted with BT, and got a free Home Hub 2 (which is newer and better than 5A, of course). That's worked flawlessly since April.

As clothing has been deemed non-essential I am awaiting news reports of naked shoppers in supermarkets in Wales.

...as seen in the average Walmart in the hotter (southern) states of the USA?
Being Wales however we may expect a more generally blue hue to such people.

Since my last router died (don't know why but it could not handle the increase from 50mbs to 100mbs), I shut mine down for 30 min every month. Sometimes that is much longer, shut it down on way out for shopping, back on when return, so think it will be some time before I see some smoke from it. :-)

Some things are designed to be left permanently switched on (or should be) - clock, fax, answerphone, fridge. MW clock radios should be like that, but my current DAB radio needs to be rebooted every couple of months, or else the buttons stop working...
