Grumble: Websites that think they know what I want.

Latest example, to test something, I tried to download the latest Windows version of Firefox. I click on download button and the .deb file for my distribution starts to download. I had to search for the option to download for another operating system despite the initial button being allegedly for the Windows download.

Grumble.
The only + I can see at the moment is the fact that my favourite saying gets confirmed yet again: Not enough people these days know either what a Mk 1 computer is or know how to use 1.
A month ago has some issues with phones.
After spending some time attempting to get through to 02, did so & "thought" issue resolved.
Oh poor naive me. :-(

Checking e-mail yesterday for other reasons, saw that there was 1 from 02.
A reminder that the next payment will be taken on 14th. WTH?
Checked via bank online,next payment due on 11 Aug.
Scrolled through statement, a payment was taken from the "so called" deleted phone on 31/6/23.

To cut a long story short, contacted 02 C/S. Got told to access A/c & update details.
I couldn't stop laughing then told them, already tried that & hit a BIG flaw in your security.
Whatever happened to sending an e-mail to the registered A/c holder with a clickable verification link to confirm said action?
Got told much better to send OTAC to phone.
Told them that I went that route, but did not click on "send passcode"
Got asked why not.
My final comment after saying this...
The passcode would have been sent to a stolen phone.
...Details will be sent to trading standards to file charges for breach of the Sale of Goods Act for selling goods with a "fake" UKCA
.Got asked to explain, so did so. They got the message & while on call, accessed my 02 A/c, device removed from A/c.
Asked C/S after being told the very same 14/6, why wasn't it done?

All I got was, it's done now & it'll take up to 24 hrs to transfer any credit to new phone.

It would have been nice if the Netgear site had warned me I might need an RJ45 to RG11 adaptor. I am all for not including extraneous junk with products but they do provide both continental and UK style AC power plugs.

Just watched Star Trek Strange New Worlds, season 2, episode 9, Subspace Rhapsody. In one word: Awesome.
Highly recommended, even if you don't like your favourite show, to do a musical.

The earlier S02 E07 · Those Old Scientists, a cross-over with Lower Decks - the animated show - was also a lot of fun.
Thus far, SNW is my favourite Star Trek series.

Just watched it myself. Awesome is the right word. Always get a kick when a series show attempts a musical. Some pull it off and some fall flat.

I too liked the crossover episode especially when I had just started watching Lower Decks a night before the SNW crossover episode. The intro had me going WTF.

Text message was an attempted delivery from Evri at 23:20.
Repeated again this morning at 03:01.

Messages from 2 different mobiles numbers with the same order number & re-booking info.
1: Have nothing on order with anyone.
2: No company do home deliveries that late or early.

I have had the same. I have on a number of occasions when asked for my email address and or bank details given the bank details for HMRC and an email address for Scotland Yard.

Grumble.

This is a very common SCAM tactic here in the USA.

The fake missed or upcoming parcel delivery or registered mail piece that needs a signature, ID verification and or additional funds from your check account text or email are a huge problem here.

They use the name of one of the parcel delivery services or US mail as a ruse to make you think it's really legitimate.

They ask you to click on a (malware) linked url to complete the information required to "deliver" the parcel...

Some of the scams even call your cell number claing to be with an "inspector" and want your info on the calls...

That never works with me.
Any text received that asks for info or requests action to be taken, I call (if family or friends) for cnfirmation.
If company (if expecting delivery) go online & check orders.
Most of the the time, they are tracked.

Saying that though, the last 6 of the previous 12 orders from Amazon have turned up days earlier than stated/expected.
What I found surprising was that many of them turned up in an Amazon Prime vehicle even though Prime was not selected.
If Amazon are trying to subtly "persuade" me....

I have had same thing with them on my last 3 small orders under $50 USD.

Amazon is sneaky here in US, they automatically have the ship by prime check by default on the check out page. Don't know if they do it elsewhere. IMHO that's sneaky and should be illegal.

The day they start taking an illegal payment for it...

Amazon now own its own logistics company and they are starting to make noise of competing with the other package delivery companies. My beef is I can't track as I can with UPS or Fedex, heck even USPS has better tracking.

Not to mention the many times their drivers / delivery agent mis-deliver a package to the wrong address.

If you a lucky, it only one or two houses up or down your street from yours. Many times in about the last 18 months there's a Amazon package on my doorstep for somewhere else in my subdivision on another street with an address not even close to mine.

One recent package a few weeks ago weighing close to 60 pounds was on my doorstep by 7am for a different part of town. Called Amazon with tracking number and they told me to kindly redeliver the "package" to the correct address.

I told the dipsh1t on the phone he77 NO. You send some one out here and redeliver it to intended recipient. If package not removed in 24 hours, I will put it to curb for trash pickup later that 2nd day.

I tried calling the phone number listed on shipping for recipient and it was disconnected. Even did a WWW and social media searches for recipient, both no luck.

2nd day came and went, big box still on my doorstep. Waited 1 week total for pickup. Still there. Decided to open the big box and found it contained multiple smaller boxes of powdered laundry detergent. Not a brand I had ever used or would use due to the perfume it contained, so I donated it to a local churches "food pantry" program.

It costs Amazon less to send out another than pay to get it where it should have gone.

Glory. Having made a not of the libraries needed to get BOINC to compile, ./_autosetup ./configure make and make install all completed successfully first time. I have not managed this before! This is the list I made last time around.
