No, it was used in the UK during the First World War, then snatched by the Yanks when it suited them. |

Should UTC be used at all? As it is the average of several clocks positioned around the world, it can only be calculated after the event. Therefore you cannot say the time is now hh:mm:ss UTC because it hasn't been calculated yet. |

You need to read up on the history of time and time keeping. There are so many twists and turns make sure you are sitting in a comfortable chair before starting your journey. |

One of the interesting off-topic lectures was a short (I think it was thirty minutes) one that raced through the history of time and time keeping from the stone age to today (well the 1970s). Talk about a gallop, shame this was pre-mobile phone days as it was impossible to keep up with the speed of delivery and no transcripts were available. (Just thinking about covering fifty centuries or more in half an hour gives me a headache these days.) |

Here in the UK, The minister for the 18th Century was talking about allowing shops to revert to only displaying weights and measures in imperial units as opposed to using the decimal system. I sent him an email asking him to demonstrate long division using Roman numerals and if he could do so I would gladly revert. (So far, I have not received a reply.) Mind you, his party have been busy recently! And make sure you at least go back to find out about why there are 60 minutes and seconds.I thought it was common knowledge, many factors (2, 3, 4, 6) so we can have things like "quarter past", and has something to do with base 12 by the Babylonians or some such people. |

Just as we shouldn't have silly rules about catering for vegetarians in restaurants.I was impressed when I toured India, in the 1980s. There, restaurants had two entrances of equal status: veg and non-veg. Each led to a dining area of equal size and architectural design, serviced by it's own kitchen. [vegetarianism for religious reasons requires that the cooking utensils aren't contaminated by contact with animal carcasses] "equal but different". |

All smokers should be hermetically sealed inside, never to be opened so they can truly enjoy their smoke again and again and no one else is ever bothered by it. Today a filth was puffing away in the car ahead of me in the drive through. Despite waiting at least 60 seconds since his last blast of gaseous oderferant when I got to the pickup window and opened the car window I was hit by his foul stench. At least it wasn't weed so I won't end up with a positive piss test. But where do I sue this filth loving jerk for the damage he has caused my body and vehicle by his utterly unnecessary release of this foul toxic substance? |

Yes, and if they have to leave their bubble they have to do so under an umbrella like structure that soaks them with coloured water should they have the urge to light up before returning to their bubble. |

Grumble:Partner unable to print because printer tells her computer it is low on toner. Glory:My Linux box says, "Sod that, print anyway!" And print is perfectly good. I will change cartridge when print quality gets dodgy. |

Glory. Energy rebate in bank. Nice, looking forward to the weekend. Taking the missus out fro dinner & drinks. Grumble. Week went from great to terrible. Received a call from my medical centre. As soon as she said they needed to update their system, I hung up. These bozo's have been bugging me for over 18 months via SMS. The worst being in March this year. Dear Sirius this is the last day for you to complete your health questionnaire. This from a medical centre on the outskirts of the city where I am not a patient. All that fuss for just 2 questions - Do you still smoke & if you do you intend to give up anytime soon. Maybe if they answered the frigging phones more often they would have no need to "update their systems". Now the really bad news, Shortly after that call, the missus came home - Early. She got sent home - tested positive for Covid. Crap. :-( |
