What if your route is a few hundred miles, surely you can't remember all that? And some of us are old enough to remember the days before satnav exisited. I suspect a higher percentage of people are getting lost on their journeys (both on roads and through life) than they were then. |

Sigh, all these tales of roman foot soldier paths that became roads. Sigh. All multi thousand mile multi day trips. Start in Seattle, end in San Diego, take I5 south. Start in Boston, end in Bishop, take US 6 west. Start in Chicago, end in Los Angeles, take - you know it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCYApJtsyd0 ;-) Sigh route 66 is no longer, now take I40 west. |

Sounds like me. I went to pick my dad up from hospital and got lost in the car park. The satnav said "left in 150 yards". I took the 1st left, which was the back entrance for ambulances. I did discover something interesting, which the ambulance drivers backed up - there is no shortage of ambulances or ambulance drivers, they're all queued up to get to the A&E entrances! An ex-colleague from Derbyshire who normally is good at map reading when he came for an interview just outside Cambridge, had only planned the journey up as far as when he came off the M11 as personnel dept had provided detailed instructions from there. One of the instructions was, "Turn Right at the top of the hill." He continued for several miles not having noticed any hill! |

Sigh, all these tales of roman foot soldier paths that became roads. Sigh. A read of Chesterton is just about essential to understand navigation in England. Before the Roman came to Rye or out to Severn strode, The rolling English drunkard made the rolling English road. A reeling road, a rolling road, that rambles round the shire, And after him the parson ran, the sexton and the squire; A merry road, a mazy road, and such as we did tread The night we went to Birmingham by way of Beachy Head. I knew no harm of Bonaparte and plenty of the Squire, And for to fight the Frenchman I did not much desire; But I did bash their baggonets because they came arrayed To straighten out the crooked road an English drunkard made, Where you and I went down the lane with ale-mugs in our hands, The night we went to Glastonbury by way of Goodwin Sands. His sins they were forgiven him; or why do flowers run Behind him; and the hedges all strengthening in the sun? The wild thing went from left to right and knew not which was which, But the wild rose was above him when they found him in the ditch. God pardon us, nor harden us; we did not see so clear The night we went to Bannockburn by way of Brighton Pier. My friends, we will not go again or ape an ancient rage, Or stretch the folly of our youth to be the shame of age, But walk with clearer eyes and ears this path that wandereth, And see undrugged in evening light the decent inn of death; For there is good news yet to hear and fine things to be seen, Before we go to Paradise by way of Kensal Green |

What if your route is a few hundred miles, surely you can't remember all that? You'd have to either stop and check the map or look at it while driving..A competent driver driver has no need to remember the whole route. You ever heard of waypoints? You posted earlier that you spent several years in logistics. To be frank, I can believe that - A local white van man. Edited for spelling. |

Glory. CT overpayment now in bank. Energy rebate is not, probably due to the fact is is not yet midnight GMT. |

Oh the irony to live in Greenwich and not be in GMT. When will the government stop messing around with time?A year or two ago a friend posted on Faceache some research debunking the theory that it reduced accidents. Besides, those who have work schedules that alter according to day length such as farmers will do things based on what the sun is doing whatever the clock says. |

We're out of the EU so perhaps we should use "DST" and "GMT"? |
