Now let's see how long it takes for a parcel delivery service to bring any needed replacements to your door and what it arrives in/with: electric van, drone, pigeon, human runner. |

After the grumbles, the glories. The cavalry has arrived - four men and a digger. Neighbours should have power today. The WiFi is working after all. The PSU is definitely f**ked - it blows the fuse in the kettle lead every time I switch the tester on. But I've got a spare in stock. Just need to cut the cables ties the professional builder had sprinkled all over the place. (Said builder - CCL - doesn't seem to carry stock any more. Soonest re-stock would be priority delivery tomorrow. If they can get past the electricity company van in the access road). |

Well, here I am again, this time from the comfort of my usual home pages and task display. Phew. It was the PSU, as the spare from downstairs confirms. But who the **** designed the modern computer? Especially those extra CPU power cables right next to the bacon-slicer of a finned CPU cooler. Had to de-mount a couple of fans, and shift the whole motherboard sideways, to get a proper grip on those. More beer, Jeeves. |

Ahhh, the wonders of Physics that dictate that all those components, cables and fingers all need to be in the same place. |

One shouldn't try to (un)plug those with the fan on the CPU cooler spinning, that defies the choice of replacing the PSU. About the PSU, what brand and model was it? Not a Gigabyte GP-P750GM or GP-P850GM? Because in that case look at this video, and then know it was a problem waiting to happen. |

No, it was a CoolerMaster G650M. No sign of external damage, but it must have short-circuited to draw more then 5A at 230V under test conditions. The spare I had was 800W, so it'll do for now. The main problem was that it was placed at the bottom (floor level) of a tower case, and the CPU power connector is at the very top. They'd run the cable under the motherboard fixing plate, through a tiny gap at the top and with a sharp 180° turn over the socket. Covering the release latches, and with no spare loose cable to let me move it out of the way. In the end, I cut it. |

And that was just one connector? Try three of them, like this (top left). Those are the 3 connectors for my AMD CPU. All the sharp edges of the heatsinks are fuuuuuuun. ;-) I did have to remove the fans at the top of the case just to have space to bend the connectors out of the grommet onto the motherboard. |

All part of why I build my own machines, out in the open, on a piece of timber, with no case. With the M/B horizontal, all the weight of the cards and fans is straight down, no hanging from the side of the M/B. And the cooling towers can be as big as they like. |

Glory: Saturday tickets ordered for 007's No Time To Die at Imax Antwerp in Belgium, as I can take Isa there without the required corona sanitation passport that we need in all kinds of establishments here in the Netherlands. Not vaccinated? No entry. It's back to segregation days. I want to celebrate my birthday with her, so we're doing a movie and afterwards a restaurant. And who knows what the rest of the night will bring. ;-) |

My Windows 10 is now advertising Windows 11 on the login screen. Have to love Micro$haft tricks. Remember they basically said to us when 10 came out, you don't own M$-WINDERS, you only rent the install license. Remember The Outer Limits (1963 TV series) famous introduction? There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. Anyways, here's instructions from How to Geek HOW TO REMOVE Windows 10’s lock screen Ads |

Grumble. Energy costs to increase from tomorrow. Before topping up both meters, decided to check e-mail to see if any notification as to how much. No joy. Did see that I got 2 e-mails from previous supplier (switched over near end of July). Gas - I "owe" them over £46.xx Electric - I owe" them £12.xx Looking at the bills closer see that both have a "closing" estimate dated 3 weeks after new supplier took over. This from a company with no common sense - previous e-mail:We noticed that you haven't topped up your gas meter in 4 months. Please contact us for help if your struggling with your bills. (Self red-acted) bozos. Haven't they heard of budgeting & pre-planning? Gas from previous supplier ran out on 15/9 (topped up 31/3). Glory Just topped up both. Will have to pay the increase from mid next month for electricity, but early Jan for gas. :-) |

My supplier hasn't announced their change yet. Am hoping an increase of solar from 1.9KW to 6.2KW will mean we still pay less. Production above usage should get shunted into immersion heater. Grumble:Their algorithm can't cope with the fact that we use less gas in the winter than the summer due to the woodstove providing all our hot water during the latter months. |

The gas price (and in some sense the electricity price) is liaised to the oil price, and with that being very high, you pay premium for new gas contracts. I just renewed my contract for 5 years with the gas price set at 91 cents per cubic meter. If the price goes up, I don't notice it. If it goes down, mine will follow. But I don't expect it to go down, with our country quitting pumping up natural gas and solely being depending on gas from Russia and Norway. |

Some will put this in the grumble category, some in the glory one: Faceache seems to be down for the vast majority of users in UK. |
