Even my Aunt and Uncle in their 80s have fibre, in the middle of a 1000 acre estate with only 14 houses in it. And my parents up in the middle of the Highlands of Scotland. It only cost them £6 a month extra to upgrade. I think you can get it anywhere in the UK now.

I could get it now but I choose not to give the only company offering it in my street my custom.

Unless you're in Hull, which seems to have its own laws, I thought everywhere could use any fibre company (although BT always do the wiring).

BT only has copper in our street. BT say 2028 for upgrading all their lines to fibre though I am hoping we get done before that. So long as I don't forget to turn network activity back on for BOINC when I have turned it off, it copes with the uploads of about 3GB a day with the tasks I am currently running.

Much the same where I live, when I asked BT a few weeks ago "When will fibre come to this corner of town?" the answer was "At least two, probably three years".
I'm only a few miles from Birmingham, in an expanding town with a population heading toward 100k. Further pressed they admitted they were doing the new-builds before thinking about in-filling the rest......
As for where my brother lives, it's more like five years, but then he does enjoy the peace of living on the edge of one of the moors in the south west where cell phones only work when there are no leaves on the trees (I jest not!).

It's BT's "resource planning", the town has a huge number of new houses being built and they get priority (in BT's eyes) over their long suffering customers.

Find out if BT charges an extra fee or gets a subsidy to connect a new house as opposed to an old one.

Can you tell Boinc to use less network activity? As in slower? That way you could leave it on all the time without interfering with other uses. Or perhaps pause it like you can pause computing?

This particular conversations started because I posted that I forgot to turn network activity back on and yes BOINC does let you restrict upload and download speeds. Fortunately I don't have a threadripper with 64 or 128 tasks running or I would then be producing data faster than it could be uploaded if I throttled the BOINC upload rate.

More dough - if they are doing fibre down your street it is nominally "free", but if they are laying fibre where no phone lines exist it's £££££££££££

I suspect it would be very difficult to sell a new house without a decent internet connection - or at least, there'd be a huge price penalty. Imagine trying to sell a house with no electricity supply.

The developer will pay - grumbling, over a barrel, but they'll pay.

There are stories from a decade or more ago where the developer laid the telecoms infrastructure with aluminium, instead of copper, wiring - to save money. It turned out to be incompatible with ADSL broadband. I don't think they'll make that mistake again, with so many people working from home.

That explains why BT are having to replace miles of "copper" in some of the newer estates around here, while those of us in the outlying longer established estates just sit waiting and waiting and waiting......
(They are actually pulling in two cables at once, a "copper" one and a fibre one", however they are not automatically connecting houses to the fibre cables....)
