I doubt it will ever exceed the UK scamera vans. 3 million times £100 a year they get from that. Only 9 of them have ever been me :-) Confused the only time a camera got me. They wanted me to do a speed awareness course. I asked them what it had to do with drugs? |

Here on the lower left coast of North America we have an incredible downfall of photons, fortunately they don't seem to be piling up. |

ROFL! So how come with 9 fines and 9 let-offs in the same country as you I've never been offered a course? Not that I want one. No idea but I preferred the course to a fine costing the same as the course plus points on my license. I think a lot depends on where in the country you are. I got done in Leicester but they get a good 50/day or more on the M11/A14 near me. |

...or rather HOPE they don't check. A neighbour's lad had the same attitude as you and suddenly got a letter telling him that his insurance had been cancelled because he hadn't told them about the 40 in a 30 "prize" he picked up. The result was a lot of money, even more points on his license and now finds it very hard to get insurance because he's had a policy cancelled. He wishes he'd told his insurers as it would have only cost about 5% a year for the first couple of years, not the thousands it's cost him so far (plus the ignominy of having to drive a diddy Fiesta instead of the Type R he previously had). |

I can't be expected to read every fine detail on the policy. Actually you ARE expected to. And if you don't, then they've got you on a legal technicality. |

That's you problem, you changed the photons to electrons! Here on the lower left coast of North America we have an incredible downfall of photons, fortunately they don't seem to be piling up.It's not nice when they do. I gathered too many in a car battery from solar panels and it exploded. |

If you crash into Mr Jones and it's his fault, his premium goes up by about £130 a year, and yours goes up by about £110 a year, almost the same amount.Mr. Smith and Mr. Jones have the same insurance company and smash into each other. Fault, doesn't matter. Each gets the full increase, because the clause in the policy says "the insurance company paid out" and it did! Of course here fault is also points. Points scale here is a bit different, not as fine grained. Most everything is one point, except the big ones like drink driving, speed contests, fault in a fatal, fleeing and evading, wrong way, those get you two. Four points and kiss your license goodbye. |

I think I'd only do a course if I was in danger of running out of space for the points. They wear off after 3 years anyway, so you can get done once a year without losing your license. Top tip - don't tell your insurance that you have points, they never check. And if there is a check because of an accident that is not your fault, you get done for being uninsured if you haven't told them and probably enough points on top to lose your license. Edit: As the fine would have been the same as the cost of the course, I can't see any reason to not do the course. |

Anyway, speeding tickets are a thing of the past since I got a satnav. And contrary to what most people think, yes they do have the mobile traps listed. Was quite funny when I slowed from 100 to 70 on warning form my satnav, then see a BMW do 130 flying past me. It took them ages to catch him. Well, that's not always the case - some forces do not declare the current location of the Scamera Vans as the move them several times during a day just to catch people like you. Also, depending on the technology of the speed detector the normal radar detectors will not pick them up. These days they tend not to chase speeding vehicles from the detector rather use a car (or pair of bikes) a few miles head that is already moving so when the speeder comes flashing past they are ready to pounce. As for penalties - they've jumped a lot in the last couple of years and are based on the speed limit, the measured speed, the driver's income. The minimum points is now three, rising rapidly to a short ban plus points ending up with much bigger fines, more points, much longer bans and even in the extreme a bit of time in one Her Majesty's B&Bs. And these days the court will pass the "good news" directly to your insurers. When the insurers get the penalty notice they can do one of several things depending on the penalty and their attitude to smaller penalties. The range is anything from "do nothing", through to "cancel the insurance now". For Gary - Yes the UK (and indeed much of Europe) use a much finer scale for "bad boy" points scale than much of the US. The UK uses a base of three points for "silly billy" type offences, running up to 11 points for the gross end of the scale, and for a single event one may get several sets of points added e.g. 3 for not wearing your seat belt, another 4 for doing 30 in a 40, 6 for jumping a read light and six for being on your non-hands-free phone which is a total of 13 points, which is a court appearance (driving ban trigger level is 12 points "unless circumstances dictate"). The court may decide to add additional points for the speeding as there are "aggravating circumstances". Points gained due to speeding stay for a minimum of four years, again the court can increase this to a maximum of 6(?) years, and they can increase "shorter life" points to the same duration, but they can't reduce the life of any points. |
