For the computing preference "use at most __% memory", what memory? Is this your total physical memory (4 GB, 8 GB, or whatever), non-BOINC free memory, ...?

The default 90% would be a lot if it's total physical memory!

If free memory, wouldn't memory compression and swapping of non-BOINC tasks make this complicated?

Thanks!

I have always assumed it is total memory. whether 90% is a lot depends on how much you have in total and what projects you are running. There are tasks out there that will not run on less than 5GB/core and if you have a lot of cores, 90% would be quite easy but on older systems like my own, even if you leave it at 90% it isn't going to get close very often.

it refers to total memory.

the key here is "at most". just because you set 90%, doesn't mean that 90% will be tied up in BOINC at all times. it's just a upper limit of what you are ALLOWING BOINC to have access to.

actual system RAM use will be entirely dependent on the projects (and hence science applications) that you are running, and how many tasks you are running concurrently.
