Hi,
BOINC Manager tells me that I provided the wrong password to connect to localhost (or 127.0.0.1).
How can I fix the problem ? (I'm on Linux Mandriva and Suse 9.2)
It's probably related to the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file (there is a characters string in it), but I don't know what to do with it (I removed it, but to no avail).
I just want to connect to BOINC without entering any password when I connect to my different machines via BoincManager
Thanks

Edit: I tried to enter the string in the password box, but it doesn't work.

I believe BOINC Manager tried to read the file too. When I start BOINC Manager in the install folder it don't ask me for the password. If I start it from a other folder, or with a link on the desktop it ask for the password. AS I remember BOINC didn't set the work directory on start up.

Thanks Jens

I have a shortcut on my desktop, and it seems the "problem" is coming from that because when I cd to the Boinc folder and start BM in command-line with ./boincmgr, it's working.

But do you know how to make the desktop link work, because it's a pain to open a command-line box each time I want to look at BM (as I'm a alpha tester for CPDN spinup, I use BM a lot to check if the model is running)

Ok
Honza gaves me the tip on the CPDN forum: just delete the random string without deleting the file gui_rpc_auth.cfg and restart BOINC: the link to Boinc Manager on my desktop is working now.
Thanks to everyone for the quick help. :o)

I was thinking about such a solution, but as it worked in the past (I still didn't find time to look in the code) this may open the client for external connections. This is not a great risk behind a firewall, but may not be such a good idea if the BOINC ports are open to the internet. - But I am not sure about the current behavior.

I use as a work around a shell script that change to the BOINC install folder and then start the Manager there. There I do too a setting of the BROWSER environment variable, that I need to overcome the "default browser" problem on my linux host. And this script is then linked to the desktop.

Or you can put in there any password that you prefer, if you want the security without having to remember the "random" one that was generated...

I was upgrading my hosts to boinc windows 5.2.2

All when well on hosts except one.

I got message that I was using wrong password. I found this thread and proceded to delete the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file and then I can monitor this host remotely using boincview without a password. All other hosts now have a password. If I manually put an entry in the cfg file I get the message I am using wrong password. It seems that is BoincView communicates with this host without a password enetered for it that there is not a password. How do I find out what the correct password for this host should be or reset it?

Is it possible to use my own designated password or do you have to use the 32 digit one generated at installation ?

It's possible to use your own password in the gui_rpc_auth.cfg but in my experience you have to stop and restart Boinc for the password to be accepted.

I had exited and restarted. I think had even made sure through task manager that no boinc or science apps where running. The only way I got it to work was have a blank password file. I don't think I had rebooted during this time. I might have made an error and this might have been version 4.72 on this host, unless I downgraded it after the report and I have forgotten that, not sure at this point. Sorry I didn't make notes at the time and forgot I had reported this.

I had four hosts still with old version which I upgraded on the 27th.
Anyway I got this one working with a password. I do remember deleting the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file on this host and insatlled 5.2.2 which assigned a new password and it works and communicates with BoincView when I enter the password there.

I discovered on some of the other hosts if you delete the gui_rpc_file.cfg and restart Boinc it should assign a new password. I'm pretty sure on that host I tried this but still that did not work at the time.
