File compression.

You don't have to have the resolution be in 3840x2160, 1920x1080 or even smaller 1280x720 will get your filesize down.
If you then get H.265 compression instead of H.264, this compresses even better. As such a 1080p resolution file will be 3.5GB in H.264, but much smaller in H.265

I have several more as to why I put them on HD's.
Saves wear & tear on the DVD's.
Also much easier to locate using a media program rather than searching through a lot of disks,
However the main reason being greedy manufacturers using inferior quality disks.
Lost many due to that but fortunately managed to replace before they became unavailable.

As for compression, understand that.
Right or wrong, I've found that too much compression ruins the quality of the film.

One makes do with what one has according to time, money & circumstances.

I prefer to buy more HDD than lower the quality, incase in the future I have a bigger or higher resolution TV to watch them on.

Don't know about paying for his TV. We don't have one, don't watch one but get letters (at least one a month) asking us to let them know if we don't require a license. I refuse to do this, returning the letters with, "Junk mail, return to sender" scrawled across them. About every third letter they tell us when an inspector is going to come to check up on us. These are returned in the same manner. Their wasting money sending these letters to us is presumably one reason why the license fee isn't cheaper.
