Message 96314 - Posted: 3 Mar 2020, 15:07:39 UTC

I have a new laptop that I like to use to run BOINC

Windows 10, McAfee AntiVirus, downloaded most recent Boincmanager 7.14.2 64 bit

When I start Boincmanager, it reports it is connecting to localhost.
That does not stop. It never connects

I can select new projects, but they cannot be reached (project is offline)
I tried switching off McAfee, but that did not help
Tried to connect to localhost, 127.0.0.1, the local IP address.
All nothing

What else do I need to look at

1999 was the last time I used Windows on my own machines so doubtless others will have some ideas but could you check in task manager to see if the client is running?

Did you install using your normal user account or with any additional admin privileges? If you did, you probably need to have admin rights to start the client.

Look in the Windows task list to see if the client - boinc.exe - is actually running. There have been many reports that BOINC client v7.14.2 (which is actually quite old) crashes at startup on some recent Intel CPUs - and if it's crashed, you can't connect to it.

You mention that it's a laptop - could you give us make, model, and - specifically - CPU model number, please?

Altijd weer die Nederlanders. ;-)
(Volg Richard's vraag eerst maar, je hebt vast een CPU die weinig energie gebruikt en daar heeft de huidige BOINC problemen mee en crasht de client op. Een fix is in de maak, maar laat nog op zich wachten. Er is een alternatief)

It is a Dell Inspiron 17 30000 series with an Intel i5-1035G1 CPU @1.00 GHz

BTW, I do not see a process boinc.exe running

Thanks. That is a Sunny Cove range CPU - specifically "Ice Lake-U" and - significantly - ultra-low power. I think it's highly likely to be the same bug.

You have two choices, both of which are known to work.

1) Safety first. the 32-bit version of BOINC runs on those machines. Download from
https://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.14.2_windows_intelx86.exe

2) Be adventurous. We have been waiting for the next version of BOINC for a long time, and it might finally be here.
https://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.16.5_windows_x86_64.exe
I've been running it for a couple of days, and so far I haven't seen any problems - including on one of the affected CPUs. But it is always possible (all-too-possible) that bugs still exist and are only revealed when we properly test the more obscure features - which I haven't done yet. It's up to you.

I was adventurous and chose the latest version.

I had to select a [blanc] computer first to make it work, but IT WORKS

Thank you very much.

I will copy my projects from my old laptop and observe for a week to see if I find any issue and report back

Good to know. Please keep us posted with any oddities you encounter, or any positive feedback you have. It would be good to get this one out of the door, it it's good enough.

The issue is being investigated currently.
The 64 bit version of the client has issues (multiple issues) on Windows 10, going years back (check out some of the tens of posts on 64 bit client not connecting on Windows 8/10).

The current solution is to either run a beta version (if you're lucky to get your hands on it);
or run the 32 bit version of the client for Windows (the 32 bit client runs 64 bit projects just fine),
or get a USB stick with a ready to go Ubuntu (or other Debian or Redhat based) version of Linux on it, and run your laptop from there.

Of course, if you're tech savvy, you can dual boot windows/Linux, but if it's a new laptop you don't really want to do that.

After a week running, I did not find any issues.
This version works fine on my laptop
