And add to Jord's list - that the project has access to developers with the appropriate skills.

Some problems are linear. The result of the last step is needed for the next step. They can't be run in parallel, so they are single core tasks. Now that doesn't mean you couldn't run that task on a GPU, but only one core of the GPU would be used, the rest would sit idle.

BOINC should just put up a sticky (in large, black letters):
Why All Projects Do Not Use GPUs

It would save a lot of repetition.

Even if it were in flashing colours with arrows pointing at it, people would ignore it or just know better than all the rest. We have a manual, with a FAQ, I have the BOINC FAQs, it doesn't matter. You can't make people read it.

The FAQ, useful though it may be, is a bit obscure. You could just link to the sticky and be done with it, if you want to.

Or you could just ignore them without guilt. If they can't find it, they probably won't understand it anyway.
Your time is valuable too.

Nick Name mentioned BOINC@TACC. Here's an article describing the University of Texas at El Paso’s School of Pharmacy running simulations through the Texas Advanced Computing Center, which this Boinc project supports.

Here's part of a Boinc@TACC thread on this project.

A list of the projects we're aware of is here.
Folding@Home is pushing a lot of COVID-19 work now if you can get it. Their servers are overwhelmed by all the compute power that's come online in the last few days. That's causing problems both getting and returning work, at least for GPU clients. Work assignment is also buggy, the client can get hung on a server that's not responding or issuing work and won't move on to another. I've set up exclusions in BOINC so that if my machine can't get FAH work, BOINC will resume. If you can put up with these quirks the work has run without any problems for me.

Another non Boinc App which startet a COVID-19 reasearch is DreamLab its available for Android and IOS

Thank you very much. I think someone mentioned that to me on Twitter but I forgot about it. I've added it to the list. Speaking of the list, it's getting a bit cluttered. Time to fix that.

A little warning for those of you running Rosetta on Android devices: check your device regularly, that it isn't stuck or waiting for you to clear (storage) memory. Don't just check the device on the website to see if it is still contacting the project correctly as that may give false information.

My old Huawei P9 Lite is running several projects, among it Rosetta. I just today checked the phone itself to find that although it had contacted Rosetta the past days, it wasn't doing anything because the 4 Rosetta tasks on the device were so big they had gobbled up all storage and the phone was waiting for me to clear space (16GB storage, 200MB free). After uninstalling everything I didn't need on the phone, it's now crunching Rosetta's again.

I also set the Target CPU Time in Project Preferences to just 2 hours (was default 8.) as this gives smaller tasks.

I have been told on Faceache that WCG is now sending out beta tasks for covid-19.

Not a BOINC or Folding@Home project, but useful anyway: https://fold.it/

We recently kicked off a new challenge in the fight against coronavirus: design a protein that might help keep a person's immune system under control. In this video, we are joined by Umut Ulge, MD PhD, who explains what can happen to somebody's immune system after they get sick with COVID-19.

I checked memory requirements of a few work units, quite a difference.

Ibercivis 77 Mb
Open Pandemic 186 Mb
Rosetta Covid 700 Mb
Folding@Home Covid - maybe someone else can advise

If you're crunching multi-threads of Rosetta and finding your system bogging down (as I did even when Boinc is idle), try switching to the other projects.

Folding@Home Covid - maybe someone else can advise

Running the Folding CPU client on my Ryzen 3950X (all 32 cores, Ubuntu 18.04.4), the FahCore_a7 is using 1.6% of 16 GB memory, or 256 MB.

Running the GPU client on an RTX 2060 (Ubuntu 18.04.4), the FahCore_22 is using 1.1% of 32 GB memory, or 352 MB.

In all my years on Folding, no one has ever complained about high memory usage.

Rosetta Covid 700 Mb

The Rosetta work units can take a lot more when they are under development; up to around 3 GB.
I currently have one running under Win7 64-bit at 2.5 GB.
And about half of the ones running on my Ubuntu machines (around 70 cores) are between 1 and 2 GB.

In a few days, they will settle down to less than 500 MB. But memory problems tend to surprise new users (and even some old ones) on Rosetta.
