I want to install the manager on a laptop that, for contractual reasons, I can't install the client, my intent is to use the manager on this system solely to manage remote clients. The OS is an Ubuntu derivative but their manager package appears to be dependent on the client. Is there a way to install only the manager for remote control of clients, without a local client? I'll compile form source if that what it takes. Pointers, links, suggestions (as long as they;re not to abusive) welcome.

I am guessing you already tried

sudo apt-get install boinc-manager

If you want the latest boinc version be sure to do the below first

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:costamagnagianfranco/boinc

However, there might be a problem accidently getting the boinc client when doing an update.

I assume the systems you want to control are on the local subnet. You might want to put in a remote desktop program such as\ VNC and use that.

The best option especially for monitoring multiple hosts/clients is BOINCTasks under WINE.

I think the boinc manager just shows you whatever the local client has processed.
You can use Boinc Bam stats, for looking at statistics via a browser (which is what the Boinc Manager might still be able to show remotely).
As far as I know, there's no direct way to use the manager, to steer remote clients, but I may be wrong about this.
At best, you'll be able to use Boinc BAM stats to see daily updates on your clients (under 'hosts').

For steering other clients (ran on other hardware), you'll need something like VNC viewer and VNC server installed, which allows you to manipulate remote client desktops.

BoincView would help my cause!
I have about 25 to 40 android clients pending a unified client (one viewer steering all clients).
If this works, I could finally start my Android server!

The only Android client I'm aware of that allowed remote management was NativeBOINC. Unfortunately development stopped several years ago. I have several ARM boards myself that are idle partly because of this problem.
