After being repeatedly advised by Boinc Manager to change the URL for climate prediction, I decided to comply.

In BM, I could find no way to change the URL, delete project being the only option offered in the menus.

I deleted then added climate prediction again, assuming the HTTPS change in the URL would take effect.

It did not, the URL shown in BM for climate prediction remains without the HTTPS, but my 7 or 8 years of accumulated stats with the project is gone and I am now starting from scratch.

As I had risen to the 99th percentile of all USA contributors to climate prediction and had long since outlasted all other members of the group I was in (Athiests/Agnostics) who had dropped out, I was proud of my contribution. Now I'm back to zero, but the important thing is that the number crunching of all those years was done, all that I've lost is bragging rights.

You can always merge the old hostID with the new one to get back your stats. Or simply edit client_state.xml and put back your old hostID after resetting rpcseq_no to what the website shows plus one.

If you deleted, and then added it back in, then it would do as you expected.
But you have to use "existing user". (Or whatever the exact words are.)
Been there, done that. :)

And did you agree to the new GDPR conditions?
If not, your stats will stop being exported to external sites.

Also, the BOINC Manager Event Log will show the url not far from the start.
Is that where you got:
It did not, the URL shown in BM for climate prediction remains without the HTTPS

I can't find Clif Brown there, so if you want it chased up, we'll need your user name.

Not sure but if the old url is being shown it may be that you need to get a more up to date BOINC. An alternative is to edit the url after selecting CPDN and add in the, "s" to http.

Which of course makes the stats fairly meaningless anyway, since they don't reflect the totality of contributors but only those who've noticed the GDPR requirement and ticked the box.
