Probably an oldie, but...

Every time I shut down Windows, I get a message box saying that BOINC has to be shut down.

Is this normal, and if not is it going to affect the tasks currently running?

At the moment I get around it by Exiting BOINC manager manually in the system tray.

BOINC doesn't get along too well with Windows, which is why it's recommended to always Exit from the BOINC Manager first.

What version of Windows are you using (Win 98?). Which version of Boinc manager.

Not likely to lose work with the newer Boinc manager as it now handles the backup file properly.

That's good news. A few less screams of anguish.

The most common thing I see when people have problems with the shutdown is a WU with an exit code 0, presumably caused when windows kills the process. Do you think this may have been solved in 5.6.* ,5.7.*?

Here I am thinking everyone is a mind reader again...

I have only noticed the problem with XP, BOINC is 5.4.11.

On projects, it's easy to find out if you don't have your computer(s) hidden and a result returned. Then it shows in the stderr.txt of the result what version of BOINC you use and in your computer(s) list what OS.

Here though, no one has registered their computers as these forums aren't a project forums. So it's nice if people say which Boinc version they use and what OS.

How have you got BOINC installed, as a single/multi user or as a service?

I would've except I just forgot the first rule of the help desk...

That's a good question. I would've just take the defaults - I assume multi-user?

first choice is single user.

It could be a timing problem. For that, check How To Increase Shutdown Time So That Processes Can Quit Properly in Windows XP in the MSKB.

Thanks, I might try that, but the message box appears well before 20 seconds is up. As far as I can tell it has not adversely affected any tasks so far, so I might just have to live with it...

The Microsoft Knowledgebase article was very interesting, I wrote a very small noddy program to set the specific registry key so that people don't need to use RegEdit.

The source code (what little there is of it) is included in the zip download.

ExtendShutdownTime.ZIP (recommended) - 207k
ExtendShutdown.EXE - 388k

Having said that, personally I'd be happier about editing via RegEdit rather than downloading random stuff of the net ... !

This talk about delays has reminded me of another strange BOINC behaviour - I had to write a program to delay BOINC Manager (BOINC.exe) loading for about 15 seconds after Windows (XP SP2) would normally load it from the startup folder .

This fixed a problem where BOINC would not start (i.e. load and perform its tasks) most of the time, unless I unloaded it and re-ran BOINC manager using its icon.

My PC is a bit old and slow (800 MHz PIII), so maybe that's the root of the problem.
