Is anyone experiencing Windows 10 crashes that appear to be due to BOINC or a BOINC project?

This scenario started late last year. After a Windows update (I think I was on Windows 10 1809) my Windows 10 Pro computer started crashing after several hours. (BSOD error: DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION) I typically do not log off at night and found that sometimes when I'd go to unlock in the morning, I'd find the computer had crashed during the night. After trial and error, observation and video driver updates, I found shutting BOINC down stopped the crashing so I lived without BOINC for a few weeks. The next month, after another Windows update, I tested BOINC and did not crash any more. Woohoo!

In May of this year, the same scenario returned. After the Windows update installation (still on Windows 10 1809), my computer started crashing. (Same DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION error) Shutting down BOINC stopped the crashing. I've been going without BOINC waiting to see if an update will fix the problem but so far they have not. During this period I also updated to 1903 but that had no effect on the crashing.

BOINC 3.1.0.1 (not as a service)

You could try the fix at https://www.thewindowsclub.com/dpc_watchdog_violation-blue-screen-in-windows-10, replacing the iastor.sys driver with the one from Windows.

Great find! After changing the driver, I've not crashed once in the week BOINC has been running.

For anyone else experiencing the problem, my computer was not exactly like the article. The Device Manager category was called "Storage controllers". The controller is "Intel Chipset SATA RAID Controller". My listed driver is "iaStorAVC.sys" after the switch.

Thanks for your help.

It was not a permanent fix. I got the BSOD with the same error. I've shut BOINC down again.

I have had various AHCI driver problems over the years using BOINC when combined with other factors. Are you using a disk cache (such as Samsung Rapid Mode cache)? That can trigger problems, though I am using it now reliably. It helps to have the latest version. Also, I have found that various anti-viruses can trigger problems; try a different one, or just use Windows Defender.

And I have found this website useful in choosing the most stable drivers for various motherboard chipsets:
https://www.win-raid.com/t25f23-Which-are-the-quot-best-quot-Intel-AHCI-RAID-drivers.html

In fact, I have found that combining SSDs with rotating disk drives is bad; I now use only SSDs, even as a backup for storage.
And if all else fails, replace your SATA cables. They do go bad.
