I recently got some work done on my computer - replaced motherboard and power supply, increased RAM from 128 to 768 mb, replaced McAfee with AVG. I've been getting frequent computer stop errors ever since - it freezes and then spontaneously restarts - usually (but not always) when BOINC is running in the background. I get several different error messages back from Microsoft, the most recent saying it's the video card and that I need to either update the driver or turn off hardware acceleration, but I've tried both and it doesn't help.

It seems like with the greater speed from the increased RAM there's something in the computer that can't keep up, especially when it's either using a lot of RAM or doing a lot of multi-tasking, and that it may just need some kind of adjustment, but everyone who has been working on this are at a loss. Can you make any suggestions? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm using an eMachines T-1742, Intel Celeron processor 1.7GHz, 768 RAM.

My feeling is that there's a problem with one of the new banks of memory. Have you tried running a memory test program? (I think there's one called something like memcheck86 ...?)

Just an idea, Lessa. My computer previously only had 256Mb of memory, so I added a extra 256 card to the second slot. The computer wouldn't even boot up. But when I swapped the cards over, each to the other slot, everything worked perfectly.

I know your problem's different, but this is an easy thing to try.

And have you tried taking the 128 card out and using the computer with only the new 512 card?
