I just downloaded the Windows client for 4.72. When I run it (to install) I get an error saying that the feature I am trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. I point it to the .msi file but that doesn't do any good. I am still running 4.19 because I have the same problem trying to install 4.45.

Does anybody have any idea what's up? Does it have something to do with being behind a firewall?

How are you connected? By network, or straight to the internet? How do you get to the internet? Dial-up, network card?

What is the exact error message?
What is saying it? Installshield? If it is that, there should be a number on the box as well.

Which Windows are you using?
If Win2k or XP, what does it say in the Event Viewer? Which event ID did the error get?

Just a couple of questions to try to help you along. :)

I'm connected to the Internet via a corporate network.

The exact error message says
The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.

Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'BOINC.msi' in the box below.

Then there's a field where you can select a file name (drop down box and 'Browse' button). The field lists a file path in the Windows\Downloaded Installations directory that doesn't exist. When I switch to the right path it just goes back to the same error message.

I'm not sure what program the message is coming from. The title bar just says 'BOINC'. The window in the background says 'BOINC - InstallShield Wizard'. No numbers anywhere.

I'm on XP Pro SP2. The only events in the Event Viewer that seem to be related to this are two successful messages in the System viewer that the Windows installer service started running successfully (7035 and 7036).

Are you allowed to use Boinc on the network?
Are you allowed to install programs to your harddrive?
Are you an Administrator or Power User and logged in as such?

Read this explanation in the MS Knowledge Base. The explanation may be for Windows 2000 & NT, but I think it will be the case here as well.

That sounds like my problem. I'll have to see if I can log on as the local administrator and install it that way. I can normally install programs without any special work.

Kind of a hassle -- I'm running 4.19 just fine. I just don't want to fall too far behind.

Thanks for your help.

Hi

I have the same problem here, but only with latest release.

I have boinc_5.2.13_windows_intelx86.exe running ok, but when I try to install boinc_5.4.9_windows_intelx86.exe, I get the error.

I'm using Win2003 x64 Enterprise

Any clues?

I'm gonna shoot ducks here as I never had this problem. I just remember reading about the same problems elsewhere (might be the SETI fora), but here it goes:

when user is about to install new version of BOINC CC, installer first tries to uninstall the old version. To do that it needs a part of old installation suite. If those files get purged from hard-drive (either by user's action or due to some other activity) it can't.
This can be cured if user runs installation of old BOINC CC. Reportedly this installation will detect that the same version is already installed and will offer to 'repair' the installation.

After 'repairing' user should be able to uninstall the old version or install a newer one.

In your case you should re-download boinc version 5.2.13 (the one you're already running) and run the installation binary. Select option to 'repair' installation. After that re-run boinc 5.4.9 installation.

Or use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to get rid of the old (possibly corrupt) BOINC listing. I don't know if this utility will work on any 64 bit Windows.

You hit the nail!

It worked ok. Apparently, the original file was corrupted (0kb), so the repair did it well.

Thanks a lot!
