hi everyone

my problem:
this computer:

works just fine - using only the CPU,
but when i enable the GPU --- 4 to 5 minuets latter --- I get the blue of screen death - with no message. so i have disabled the GPU

my other computer:

works fine using GPU and CPU together:
- under the drop down menue in BOINC - under Activity - i have choosen:
- Run always.
- Use GPU always
- Network activity always.

Both my computers are attached to 38 different BOINC projects - each BOINC project gets approx. 2.74% of the, computers resource share. i use Local based Computing preferences - for both my computers - rather than web-based prefs.

What i have done so far to try to remedy the problem?

i think that you Long time Help desk experts who know me --- and know that my computer skils are not that great :(
so i have been a little hesitant to make any changes to my computer.
i remember seeing a thread about this --- but i can't remember where,
so i have mainly been doing Google searches to try to find that thread -- and find other info re GPU BSOD -- but to no avail.

"4 to 5 minutes" sounds like the timescale for a thermal problem - dusty, stuck, or failed fan, perhaps. Take the lid off and give it a careful, but thorough, inspection and hoovering.

BSODs usually display a 'STOP' number, with sometimes an English translation as well. Those might be helpful.

Download and install Bluescreenview from https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html and it'll tell you what the last BSOD said.

@ Jord and @ Richard ….. I did DL that program, hmm, can't seem to get it to work?
GPU did worked on BOINC 7.14.2 for One hour, then computer crashed,
BTW when computer Crashes,
it has always been either purple or red or white or yellow and of course blue screen of death, with no message on screen.
so I disabled GPU in BOINC, CPU in BOINC works fine.
I got a message from window to check HD for errors,
so I let that windows HD error tool do its thing ….. seem to fix errors.
and i stay away from those Registry cleaning tools,
I never go near Registry.
that's like open heart surgery, one small miss step and the computer is dead forever.

@ Richard, yep computer full of dust bunnies,
so with my canned compressed air, i cleaned air cleaned out dust bunnies,
care full to use my wrist strap to ground my self. no static electricity.

Glad to hear the bunnies are evicted. Are the fans spinning on the GPU? I didn't see any mention of that.

Good point, I will check that out. Just got home.

Also the CPU and any case fans. I see Universe tasks being worked on in the log. Something like MSI AB, GPU-Z or HWMonitor can monitor the temps.

Greetings, Which CPU and GPU temperature monitoring software do you guys recommend? ….. So CPU-Z is not really used anymore? .... and HwMonitor ... I also use MSI AB to change my GFX Card's fan curve and can use it ...

Keep CPU and GPU low 80s max while gaming. I like afterburner as you can mess with the fan profile if you want lower temps for your gpu or slow fans down to make it quiter if you wish.

Cut a narrow strip of stiff paper, and push it gently through the ventilation slots in the cover while the machine is running.

If the fan's spinning, you'll hear the blades hit the paper, and you ears will give you an idea of how fast it's running. If all you hear is the sound of silence, either you've picked the wrong ventilation slot, or the fan has stopped.

That card is probably several years old by now. I use mine 24/7, and they usually die in 3 years or so. Try another card.

Ok, that is positive at least. Did you download a program to monitor GPU temperature? I'm a fan of HWinfo. Run one of those types of programs and get your GPU temp reading. I'm curious what it is before running boinc and what temperature it gets up to before you get BSOD.

Try hovering your mouse immediately below to the green "Download for Free", and then click on one of the blue links when the green button rolls down into a blue window (best way I could describe it).

Advertising. Usually the advertiser's (interpolated) download button is larger, more prominent and more eye-catching than the download product that brought you to the page in the first place.

They cause vastly more problems than they ever cure, and you need to exercise care only to download the product you really want.

I don't see an orange button. Am using uMatrix as script blocker and uBlock Origin for adblocker, and I think that as long as I don't allow the 28 scripts & 4 page requests that want to run to continue to do so, that I won't be bothered with the orange ad button either. :)

From Wikipedia:

Scalable Link Interface (SLI) is a brand name for a multi-GPU technology developed by Nvidia for linking two or more video cards together to produce a single output.

If you have two (or sometimes even more) identical NVidia GPUs, you can hook them together to form the equivalent of one big GPU.

That doesn't help with the work we do in BOINC: BOINC will still see you as having multiple smaller cards, and will use them independently. It's probably better not to have the SLI link present for our sort of work.
