Hi BOINC, I just want to inform you that it is not fair to run project computing without user permissions. Do not you think so?
I run BOINC for Seti project and your BOINC manager started to compute another project without my knowledge - Amicable Numbers. I have never registered or done something connected with this project so why it started to use my computer without any reason?
As I am writing this, your BOINC manager started another project without my permission - GPUGRID. What the hell it is?

Thanks a lot for this unwanted using of my computer. Version 7.12.1 downloaded direct from your website. Currently stopped all works and deleting this SCAM Manager until there will be any explanation what does it mean.

Did you read my post at SETI@Home??

I asked you if by chance you joined Science United by mistake

If you did then that would be the reason.

I have not see anyone else complaining.

Version 7.12.1 downloaded direct from your website.
Which website? How did you download it? Using the Join Science United button on https://boinc.berkeley.edu/index.php, or by physically downloading the installer from https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php?

If using Science United, then that's the explanation. Here you tell what kinds of science areas you want to support and those will be added to BOINC. It's not a per project setup, but per multiple projects, whichever are in the support areas you chose. Using Science United you also run with an anonymous account, you don't gather any credit for yourself.

If you chose to download and install BOINC by yourself, then make sure you aren't using another account manager, because if you are, the projects you chose to support in that account manager will be added to BOINC.

Now, I am confused and I am not a newcomer. Reading both of those links, the user can download BOINC version 7.14.2. Although they are the same version does it mean that that the Science United version is different from the version we use normally? Why is there not a differently named version for Science United.? Don't you think this is confusing or is it just me. It can't be just me since that newbie found out the hard way and he did not want a project running on his computer that he did not ask for. Can't we separate the two , perhaps rename might be in order. The old acronym might have worked when there was just one Boinc project but now that we have two it is confusing.

Further to what I stated in my previous post regarding the confusion, I believe there could also be a bug in version 7.12.1, the version I am still running. A Day before the Current Formula Boinc Sprint, I was only running nci.goofyxgrid and wuProp, all other projects were on No new Tasks. I downloaded Universe WU's and some time later I noticed that Einstein was running also. I had not crunched this project for ages. I checked the Project status and it was set to No New Task. I Aborted the WU' and some time later I noted that it was running again. A check of the project status has not changed and still showed No New Task. Since I did not want any interference in the challenge, I Deleted the project. This might even explain why that Newbie is having problems.

I rather agree, but there is some logic behind it.

The basic program which runs on your computer is still BOINC, and that won't change.

Science United is an optional new layer which sits on top of BOINC, and behaves as an Account Manager (they have existed for some time, but this is a new one).

The behaviour described by MarekK in the opening post sounds to me like the way Science United is designed to be used: you choose - on the Science United website - an area of science that you are interested in supporting, and the Account Manager function translates that into project names and attaches them for you. One advantage would be that if a new project comes along (and convinces SU that it's fit, proper, and worthwhile), then it can be attached automatically to the existing pool of volunteers in that area of science, without having to do their own recruitment drive. We'll see how that works.

On the Einstein question: it's been the case for a long time (not new in v7.12) that BOINC will collect a "Resent lost task" from a project even when 'no new tasks' is selected: *new* is interpreted very strictly in that case. I'd be interested to sent what your event log shows for those Einstein tasks, before you categorise it as a bug.

Sorry Richard, I can't help with logs since I have restarted my machines after a storm blackout that night. Since it is hopefully a one off problem, I am not concerned.

Logs are kept through restarts, in the files stdoutdae.txt and stdoutdae.old - both in your BOINC data directory, wherever you chose to locate that. The location will be listed right at the top of the restarted log.

OK Richard, I concede that it is not a bug in its true meaning, however, I call it an inbuilt nuisance. When I reset the project and than detach from the project indicating to the manager that I do not want any new projects, I do not wish to receive lost projects for I do not wish to crunch that project period. Setting the project to No New Tasks, Aborting the WU, Resetting the project makes no difference I still get WU's that I do not want. After all why are we forced to crunch a WU that errors out after 1 minute to 15 minutes of crunching. The only way to avoid this is to detach. If this would happen in the New BOINC set up, I would not know anything about it but the WU would be useless to the scientist and I would still have to pay the electricity for crunching useless tasks.

Here is the relevant section of stdoutdae.txt

I was under the impression that we have control of what project and WU we want to crunch. In this case this is not so for the project insists that I crunch lost WU's despite my choice of selecting No New Tasks. They will probably say: Oh but they are not New tasks, they are lost tasks that I must crunch weather I like it or not. Now I can see why slowly but surely we are forced to accept the NEW BOINC way of crunching where the user has no control.

Out of curiosity, what happens when you Suspend that project. (Under the Projects tab.) ?

It will stop running as expected and eventually they will pass the deadline and will be lost again, but the point is that I have no control over downloading. I just don't want any WU's downloaded when I ask: 'No New Tasks'. To me it was just as simple to detach the project.

If it happens again, I suggest you

  • Abort the tasks
  • Update the project
  • and only then reset the project

Resetting the project by itself doesn't tell the server that you don't want to see the tasks ever again: it's intended to let you make a clean start and then carry on.

Your procedure is the reason the tasks got lost in the first place.

Than please tell me what is the purpose of setting the project to: "No New Tasks" Before and After I Abort and Reset the Task. Updating asks for New Tasks if I did not set it to No New Tasks. In the sample I indicated in bold text that I have asked not to send me new tasks. Apparently it does not do anything what it suggests it does. I did as suggested and even though the project is set to NO NEW Tasks a couple of times I am still getting tasks.

Note that the Project option was set to No New Tasks , did as you suggested and after the final update project when the project was still set to No New Tasks I still got tasks downloaded. Therefore the option is not working as one would aspect. I stated before that I wanted the tasks gone because they were erroring out and wasting power. Note also that the only way I could abort it by suspending the project first.

Resent tasks are not new tasks, they are tasks that are registered against your hostID (computer). When you have a scheduler contact with the server, the server compares the content of the project directory with that in the database and if it finds that you have tasks missing that are registered against your computer, these get resent to that computer.

Aborting them and allowing them to be reported fixes that. If the tasks aren't reported, the project will always try to resend these tasks when you have contact with the project and it's found they are missing.

The sequence is vital.

1) Abort
2) Update
3) Reset (but see below)

Update doesn't request work: it reports the full state of the project, including telling the server that you have aborted the tasks. You won't get those same tasks ever again (fingers crossed!). Only if you are short of work (by your current global cache settings) will it request work.

In your most recent log, you did not abort the resent tasks

LATeah0104S_1028.0_0_0.0_2223312_1
LATeah0104S_1028.0_0_0.0_2224330_0
LATeah0042F_1512.0_735174_0.0_1

and you reset the project before you updated it to tell the server that you (intended to but hadn't) aborted them.

Look at your task list on the project server to see how many are currently listed as 'in progress'. If there are only three, then a single Resend / Abort / Update cycle will achieve what you want - don't bother with reset (unless to want to recover the disk space) - at the moment, you're just wasting bandwidth downloading everything again and again.
