Running an older machine, as I do for a home server, has its advantages. One is that large amounts of memory cost relatively little. In this case, populating the server with 128GB ddr2 costs less than $2 per GB.

Are there BOINC projects that either require or would benefit from a considerable swath of that memory dedicated to them?

If so, which projects are they, and what setup is recommended for best allocation, e.g. VMs vs. .ini tweaking?

Another option is to run BOINC from a ram disk which may get rid of any slight bottlenecks in i/o operations.

I would suggest the figures of the amount of ram needed from the link below (or above depending on whether you order posts newest first or not) are optimistic. My experience with CPDN is that the current task types are much more likely to error out if you have less than 1GB of ram/core free. (My current machines all have 2GB/core and that seems fine for all the projects I have tried.)

I know the ECM subproject at YoYo@home can eat a lot of memory at times. Last time we ran that for a challenge, we were seeing up to 11GB RAM required for many of the work units.

Other ideas would be to run the projects that use Virtualbox. Some of those can use 3+GB RAM as well.

And of course as mentioned above, setting up a Ramdrive and having your BOINC data directory in it to speed up processing on projects that may have high IO would be a good option as well.
