My machine crashed the other day, and i had two problems when i tried to restart BOINC. The first problem, i've solved - the "lockfile" was still in place, which was generating an Error 108 (i think). I have now removed the lockfile, and BOINC does appear to be running. However, when i try to load the boinc manager GUI, after it loads, i get the following dialog box: "The password you have entered is incorrect. Please try again." I have not ever changed the password, and i think it may have become corrupted somehow. Does anyone know how i can rescue this situation? The password is an automatically generated key in gui_rpc_auth.cfg in your BOINC folder. Try editing the key out and replacing it with your own password (6 characters minimal) |

The password is an automatically generated key in gui_rpc_auth.cfg in your BOINC folder. ok, i've tried this, and no luck. I changed the long password for a much shorter one, which i know. I then stopped and started the boinc service, and loaded the GUI again. First of all, i got the same error - incorrect password, so i tried to reconnect using the new one, but got the same error again! Any other ideas? You did fill in the password? Open Boinc Manager, go through the error, then Advanced, Select computer. Fill in localhost plus your password. |

OK... something else to try. Exit BOINC (for so far you aren't out ;)). Open that file, delete all contents. Now just leave one single Enter in it. Save the file. Start up Boinc Manager. Go through the password trouble part. Advanced, Select computer, fill in localhost and leave the password blank. Does that fix it? (never did for me, but it did for others) If it doesn't fix it either, exit BOINC, delete the whole file. Just get rid of it. Restart BOINC. It should make this file anew, with the 32 chatacter key in it again. |

ok, i tried both of those, and still no luck. First of all, i stopped boinc, put a single carriage return/line break in the file, started boinc again, and tried to connect with an empty password. No luck. Then i stopped boinc again, deleted "gui_rpc_auth.cfg" completely, restarted boinc, and then tried to connect again, but i got the same incorrect password box. Any more ideas?? i definitely use an official BOINC client... not sure of the version, but it's less than 6 months old. Also, the password i enter into this "gui_rpc_auth.cfg" file seems to automatically appear in the password box in the GUI after i type in the hostname each time... Are you sure this "gui_rpc_auth.cfg" file isn't just a saved password from whatever i type into the login box? How can i reset the password of whatever it is i'm actually logging into? how about reinstalling the software again, and reattach to the projects? i dont know if u will lose (a lot of)work but i think that would be easier |

how about reinstalling the software again, and reattach to the projects? Reinstalling/uninstalling BOINC does not delete any of the existing project data files. When going through the installation just pick the same directory that BOINC is located in. Afterwards it will be ready to resume any work that existed from before the install. But it is always good to backup your directory just in case. |

don't worry people... i've fixed it! It was purely accidental though. We had an extended power outage here, which my UPS couldn't cope with, so all my machines shut down.
