It is refreshing for someone to give a real explanation, good or bad. Our imaginations can get rather creative. But that is the problem. The facts are better.

Well, having said all of that, there may be a few test runs get put onto the main site from time to time.
But they're for running immediately, not hoarding to run over the coming months.

It's the big batches of several thousand that aren't going to be released yet.

My solution to whatever the problem is, is to replace everything with quantum computers, all linked with laser beams. Which would need to be multiply redundant, because of pigeons.
Maybe next year. :)

As for logging in, I ended up at the test page, the same as Jord.
Another 6 hours before I can expect to hear from Andy again. Longer if he's sitting in a dark room having a headache.

Byron threw up a link to FAQ's, all that did was thoroughly confuse me.

I am sorry and I do sincerly apologize to you,
Byron.

That's OK, no harm done. I wanted to wrap my head around all this and I did feel foolish after Les answered my questions. I should have just stopped worrying about it and let it go, that's why I felt stupid, not your fault.

Just noticed DC Stats posted a CPDN Credit update, or rather a downdate. Total credits went down by 37%. This erases, hopefully temporary, a few years of volunteer processing.

Maybe Global Warming goes back that far too.

You'll need to be logged into the backup server, which IS up.

I posted about this on the cpdn Message boards, but if you can't see that either, then this is what you need:

-----------------------------------

The project is running on the backup server, and Andy is having problems with some of the many scripts, which is why it's hard to login in at the moment.
As the moderators come into their day time, we're testing things, and emailing Andy, who won't get them until the world rotates into his day time.

The url of the backup server is:
http://ithaqua.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/

This can be seen thusly:
Go to the climateprediction.net main page
In the bottom right corner, click on BOINC User Pages
At the top left, under Join, 4th line down

-------------

And it's at this point where some people are having problems, due to the script errors.

I've logged in on one computer, but I can't on the other. I'm still thinking about this.

Is it possible to change an attached project to use this URL? If I detach, I lose the work units. I have tried changing running ones in the past, and things just get stuck.

No, you cannot. The backup server is for the moment only to be able to get onto the forums and perhaps to get more work - which you have to report at the backup server as it has its own URL. You cannot report work done for CPDN on the https://www.cpdn.org/boinc/ URL on the 'new' URL.

Thanks. After these finish, I could change to the backup. But then they will deactivate that one to go back to the main one.
It is a Catch 22 for now. I hope there is some announcement when things finally get straightened out, and it is safe to go back.

As there's no work at present, it doesn't matter what you do.
On the backup server, you can watch the BOINC backend functions come and go, (the Transitioner is down at present), look at the empty queue of Unsent tasks , and complain bitterly on the Message boards.

Or play lots of golf.

Maybe only when global warming will not be an issue any more.

It may be faster to just cancel everything and start over. I pay no attention to credits myself, and if that is contributing to the problem, then just get rid of them. Do what WCG does. Just monitor the CPU time on each project, and award badges accordingly. It keeps everyone happy, and you could probably backup the database for it on a thumb drive. (Though there is probably more to the present problem than I know however).

I suspect that the server isn't down so much as it and the connections to it are getting a hammering from thousands of people trying to get to it.
It took me AGES to get to the News thread, and just as long to post it.

Keep retrying every few seconds.

Took about half an hour to finally get through.

Since it's impossible to get to the News forum, I'll be reposting what Andy wrote here as well.

Andy Bowery, CPDN admin wrote:
First of all the project: http://www.climateathome.info is not a CPDN project, it is a BOINC project that I understand is not currently active.

So here is an update on the infrastructure:

The CPDN computing infrastructure is based in the department of OeRC (Oxford eResearch Centre), 90% of it is running in a cloud computing environment that is shared by a number of non-CPDN projects. This cloud computing environment can be divided into two parts: a virtual machine side where the servers run, and a file system. Since the beginning of April there has been a major problem with the virtual machine side of this cloud computing environment, this problem has been progressively corrupting each one of the servers of the project. What this means is that each one of the project servers will need to be rebuilt from scratch, 7 or 8 servers will need to be rebuilt. It is anticipated that it will possibly take some weeks to setup the whole CPDN infrastructure again, in the meantime the project will continue to run from the backup project server that is outside of the cloud computing environment. In the meantime we will be sending out only the most important batches of workunits.

Thanks very much for your patience through this, and thanks to you and the other Moderators for responding to volunteers on the boards.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

I am a refugee from QCN, and recognized your name immediately. But WCG somehow makes "the cloud" work reliably. It must take a dedicated organization to do it. Whether it is worth that for a given BOINC project is beyond my knowledge.

Isn't WCG hosted by IBM?
