I recently got a new Thinkpad T60 notebook. It has an Intel core duo T2600 @2.16GHZ. When BOINC is running my applications stop/freeze for a period of time then continue. BOINC shows 2 WU's running on the 2 processors (setup as 2 processors in preferences). For example, opening a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet takes several minutes to open with boinc running. Only 5 seconds without BOINC.

Has anyone else seen this happen? Can I tune BOINC to address this?

Two questions :

How much memory do you have? (possibility of a thrashing hard disk)

What temperature is the CPU at? (possibility of thermal throttling)

I have 2GB ram. Task manager shows 1 gb free during regular usage (lotus notes email open, firefox open).

I installed the 5.6.5 dev version and still have problem.

How can I tell cpu temp? Would the temperature only effect MS office? this is the only app impacted.

Updated information. I can open/close browsers, iTunes, lotus notes and they open just fine. MS excel is the app I use all the time. What is strange is that when I double click a spreadsheet while looking at the "My documents" window, then opening takes several minutes. If I go to "start-all programs" and open excel, it pops up in 5 seconds. Then I can do file-open and my spreadsheet opens up <1 sec.

There must be some MS issue.
