I'm a compete newby, trying to install Bonic for the first time. I'm running on a older but good (I-7, 16 GB) computer that I reformated, then installed Ubantu Linux 16.04.3 in 64 bit mode. I really set this up to just run SETI, since I have no special need for it otherwise. I went to the download page, and clicked on the download button. Then ran the download file. Got an error message from gedit saying that there were unreadable characters in the file. Tried it three times, with a clean download file each time. Same error. Then I tried the command line install as given on the bonic linux page for ubantu: sudo aptitude install bonic-client bonic-manager got an error message: aptitude unknown command. Checked the man page, no aptitude. Any ideas? Pete |

Which dowload page? For my Linux installations I used the depository installation rather than the download page. Start the package manager, search for boinc and allow the package manager to do the installtion. Once boinc is running you can select the projects you want to run from within boinc. |

If you are new to Linux I'd recommend the Berkeley version of BOINC that I updated to run in Ubuntu 16.04 and above. It's extremely easy to 'install' and run from your Home folder. Just download the file, expand it to your Home folder, install the One dependency, then open the BOINC folder and double click on boincmgr. It's here, BOINC 7.8.3 for Linux. You can't get any easier. |

I am having the exact same problem with Ubuntu mate 16.04 on my raspberry pi 3. I also tried it with raspbian. It may be a problem with the BOINC servers. |

I am having the exact same problem with Ubuntu mate 16.04 on my raspberry pi 3. I also tried it with raspbian. It may be a problem with the BOINC servers. With Raspbian you would just do the following commands. You only need the the manager if running a desktop. If you are running Stretch Lite or headless then you only need the client. sudo apt update sudo apt install boinc-client boinc-manager-y It will use the Raspbian repos, nothing to do with the BOINC servers. It should install 7.6.33. MarkJ |

Greetings. To the original question about aptitude... I wasn't found on the man page because it wasn't installed yet. There are different insatall packages. I like 'aptitude ' myself, so: sudo apt-get install aptitude should install aptitude Note: uing a <tab> will expand the name of a command, so: apti<tab> should expand to aptitude. sudo aptitude install boinc will install - boinc manager - boinc client then, once boinc is running, you can install whatever projects you want. [start soapbox] Try World Community Grid. - it is a project of subprojects that crunch for cures for diseases. [end soapbox] Enjoy! Jay There is NO reason to have to get Boinc sources and compile them. Using aptitude will ensure that the proper versions of all libraries and also installed and linked in. the ubuntu forums have a lot more details there.... |
