Hey guys, I am new here. I am considering contributing some CPU's to BOINC projects, but I don't have any GPU's available. That there are several computational tasks that actually run better in CPU's than in GPU's, for example when they require intensive RAM usage or it performs lots of global memory accesses. Therefore I wanted to employ my CPU's in such problems, instead of investing on projects where GPU's would be better suited and more energy efficient. I am aware that there are several projects at BOINC that are CPU-only, but this is not what I am looking for now. Perhaps these projects don't have a GPU implementation as for yet, but they could be implemented in the future. Of course I would be helping the world anyway. But I would feel more comfortable knowing that the problem I am working on requires CPU's by its very nature and that no amount of further implementations would make a GPU beat them. I also have the impression that some projects run exclusively on CPU because they can only run inside Virtual Machines. This also feels a bit frustrating for me. Again I want the CPU to shine and not be the only choice available while no other implementation gets written. Any ideas? Projects? |
