Hello there,

I was thinking about installing the BOINC app on my Android phone but I was a bit disappointed when I was asked to download the App from the Google Play Store because a download from the normal site is not recommended. I asked myself whether its possible to additionally release the App on the F-Droid store, which would be in my opinion a crucial improvement for privacy concerned users and interesting for people using other mobile operating systems such as Lineage. As I dont know a lot about programming, I cant tell if the Android App somehow may violate the F-Droid Inclusion Policy (https://f-droid.org/en/docs/Inclusion_Policy/).
I couldt find any recent discussion about this topic, do you know more about it (for example previous attempts to add the app to F-Droid)?

Thanks in advance.

We (the BOINC working committee) have decided that for now the only BOINC apps we'll officially support are those for Windows, Linux, Mac OS (X) and Android (Google Play Store). None of the other apps that we have out there will be (officially) renewed, nor will we add to any other outlet.

Are you not able to download it directly from here? https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php or https://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.4.53.apk

I ask because I'm not sure why it isn't recommended unless your phone is talking about installing from 3rd parties AKA side loading. It should work just fine.

You CAN download the APK but it's preferred to use the Play store.

You will need Android 4.1 or higher to use it if you sideload it. BOINC won't guarantee the fitness of it acquiring it from any third party site though. It should be installable on any Droid 4.1 or higher device thru the Play store. There ARE other versions of BOINC not from Berkeley but they are all outdated and you will find most, maybe all now, projects aren't supported.
