My old iMac G3 has MacOS X Tiger, has a 700MHz CPU, and has 512 MB of RAM. Is this sufficient to run boinc?

You can download BOINC 7.2.42 from https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php and run that. That is the maximum version you can install on OS X 10.4

The problem you probably have is that the SSL is too old to actually run a project. Einstein@home and seti@home support PowerPC CPUs, but I wasn't able to connect an old mac to run because of the SSL problem. PowerPCs are apparently pretty good for Einstein@home

Einstein has not had PowerPC tasks for a long time. You should also try Moo! Wrapper. There aren't many PowerPC projects left anymore; I still have a PowerBook G4 but haven't used it recently to say which projects are still giving work. WUprop used to be my guide for figuring out which projects were still good, but they're not reporting anything on PowerPC anymore. Best of luck.

It appears there are still PowerPC crunchers on SETI. :)

I looked at LHC@home, one of the senior projects, and it appears no PowerPC. I also checked Rosetta and nothing there either.


Did a little quick digging though and I found this old post:

It might at least give you an idea of where to look and see if they have PowerPC support still. You might have luck with some of the senior math projects. I don't really follow them, so maybe somebody else can provide suggestions?

I just did a quick and dirty Google search and the old post was one of the first results that showed up. I didn't see any messages about an updated thread so I thought it just fallen into disarray over the years. I didn't dig deeper as I just wanted to see if I could come up with anything.

I thought you two were seeing things so I went back and scrolling down I saw 'PPC' which is why I didn't see when I did a CTRL-F for 'power'

I suspect that the list needs a scrubbing overall. I think the lists get forgotten over time. If you look at SETI they still have v7 apps listed...

Yavanius, I may not keep that list up to date without the help of others pointing things out when they change. It becomes too much to keep up with over time as so many projects are constantly in flux. So, feel free to give me a poke when you notice something out of date.

Actually, what I intended was that in the old thread have a link to the new thread for those of us stumbling across it or perhaps even old bookmarks. ;)

The reason I didn't put a link to the new thread is that the forum software had changed since the initial post. The new software has a much smaller allowance of characters/lines to it. So, if I tried to edit the first post it would not save without deleting most of it out which I try not to do. I didn't want to add it in a following post as people may not bother reading past the first one.

I understand that. My main thought was less stumbling across like I did then folks bookmark things, forget it about till needed again and come back and go "Oh, no updates in quite a whiles."

Maybe you can just put a pointer of where to look for newer information so you don't have to worry about exact URLs? If they really want the info they'll keep looking, and if not, then they'll grumble and either (ironically) go back to Google or forget about it.
