Just downloaded the latest iteration from the downloads page (file: boinc_7.8.3_windows_x86_64_vbox.exe) and ran it through a few different online virus programs. Some showed no issues, but VirusTotal found / detected several different Trojans:

Virus Total - https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/aa54edb7a129aef639e358e00e89be56c31a451a4d1eafefbb740697bcf2537c/analysis/1508199590/

eGambit > malicious_confidence_75%
Rising > Trojan.Injector!1.AE04 (CLASSIC)

I wanted to bring this up / check with you all to ensure this file was clean.

Cheers! :)

eGambit > malicious_confidence_75%
Rising > Trojan.Injector!1.AE04 (CLASSIC)

I run another scan for that file. eGambit has been removed from the list of scanning engines and Rising says the file is safe.

Hmmm... I'm still seeing the same virus results after re-running:

I'm seeing that same now. I had used URL-scan. That gave green results by every engine. Well, I've never heard of those two players... wouldn't worry much as 60+ others show green.

I already use the 7.8.3 version for over a week. It solved an issue, i had with 7.8.2 @ milkyway.

Regarding the false positives from virus scans:
Of course BOINC is a highly suspect program to every AV-scanner. It sits in the background and opens connections to the internet. The same behavior can be observed from real viruses and trojans. So it is always a good idea to exclude the BOINC and the BOINCDATA directory from scans.

Right on, I assumed it was something along those lines.. but regardless, wanted to bring it to the devs / community's attention in case it might've been affected. #constantvigilance

Thanks for taking a look at it everyone :)

Both of those logs relate to project science applications, rather than BOINC itself - WCGRID_SCC1_VINA_7.08_WINDOWS_X86_64 from World Community Grid and MINIROSETTA_3.78_WINDOWS_INTELX86.EXE from Bakerlab.

As far as I know, there's been no change in the way BOINC launches application binaries in the new version. Do you have any confirmation logs which point directly to BOINC being the culprit, rather than the project files?

For what it's worth, McAfee Adaptive Threat Protection (ATP) "analyzes content from your enterprise and decides what to do based on file reputation, rules, and reputation thresholds." - in other words, it's not saying these 'are' viruses, it's saying 'these files might be bahaving a bit like viruses, and we don't know enough about them to be certain'. These are known as 'false positives', and usually clear up after a few days after enough people complain to the virus company in question and persuade them to check the programs more carefully. You can help the process along by passing your report direct to McAfee.

Can you believe the reported uninstall issues from 2012 still exist? Wow! Nice work guys. Latest release does not address Win 10 BSOD unrecoverable error - Microsoft recommends uninstalling latest installed program. Which still seems cannot be done using the layperson option to click on UNINSTALL

If the problem you reference is "BOINC.msi cannot be found, or similar, then do know that this is a Windows error. It's Windows that forgets where it placed the BOINC.msi installation file that it needs to uninstall the previous version. In this BOINC FAQ are several steps that can remedy the problem. I suggest you start with step 2, use the Microsoft uninstall utility.

I have a machine with a fully-licensed McAfee subscription, also running v7.8.3: I'm doing a forced update now. I'll let you know how I get on when it finishes.

This is taking a while: the update ran for 35 minutes with 0% progress, before I killed it. After a reboot, it ran better: I'm now 36% of the way through a full scan.

My BOINC programs are installed in C:\BOINC, and we're well past that point - I watched the scanner go through that folder, and it found nothing.

I'm using version 20.4, build 20.4.168, engine version 3152.0, updated/created today.

I'll post a full report when its finished, but it's beginning to look as if:

a) you might have a corrupted McAfee installation, or
b) the BOINC files might have got infected on the way to your machine. My copy was downloaded direct from Berkeley on 04 October 2017.

I've completed my full scan with updated McAfee, and no malware whatsoever was found or reported. Clean bill of health, including BOINC v7.8.3 and attached projects.

It's possible the file got deleted too either by the user (it's installed, why do you need an install file, right? ;)) or an overzealous cleanup program eliminated it.

The first I learned a whiles back not to delete MSI files unless I really know they're orphans.

The second, later on, I had MSI files just disappear. Could have been a cleanup program. I just know I didn't touch them. I have wondered if Windows might have been responsible in some cases believing the file wasn't needed. Its not something you usually track.... :/
