Nevermind. I found the BOINC 7.7/7.8 Change Log thread: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=11539#77013

Yes - a false positive. One of the tests used by a lot of av software is the number of downloads, and BOINC often falls below the "safe" threshold.

Thanks for irony
We know (you and i) that is very difficult that Boinc app is infected, but a new user may be frightened...

If one antivirus software gave an alert it's useful to get another opinion. There are some online virus scanners that utilize tens of different scan engines (also the big names). Those multi-scanners can be used to scan Boinc installer files, already before launching the installer locally. For example...

VirusTotal:
https://www.virustotal.com/#/home/url

Metadefender:

It was just the 'Downolad' in the advertisement that amused me...

(it was more prominent in the original formatting)

The download page has this link at the bottom for Release Notes: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Release_Notes

This redirects automatically to a page that shows Release Notes for Boinc 7.6 - with this explanatory first line:

Version 7.6.33 of BOINC was released for general public use Macintosh on December 8, 2016.

My BOINC Messenger just recently brought up the following new notice:
Notice from BOINC
A new version of BOINC is available. (7.8.2) Download
9/14/2017 1:15:38 AM · more...

Clicking "more" brought me to the same page as Mei mentioned, https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Release_Notes_for_BOINC_7.6. Has the Release Notes page for this latest BOINC version been updated or just not published yet? Seems notice a bit ahead of itself and a bit confusing. I wanted to get some idea of any advantages of this new version versus the one I'm using before downloading and installing. Just an FYI, thanks.

I asked the release manager and he hopes someone else will do them. So it's anyone's guess.
I have an unofficial change log thread over on the BOINC forums: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=11539 but we're not sure all those changes between 7.6.33 and 7.7.2 and BOINC 7.8.0 are in there. Only the release manager knows, and he won't tell.

I suspect the word is "can't", rather than "won't": he's been the one making the changes, and I have a strong suspicion that he hasn't been keeping notes. So, he can't tell you what he's done, and he won't put in the hours of research needed to work it out. We can probably split it up into sections and work it out between us, but it's going to be a while.

Thanks to Ageless and Richard for the update/"clarification." I think I will hold off on doing this update until I have more info on possible benefits over 7.6.33. Once folks are curious enough to update, we should start getting real world feedback with pros and cons. Thanks again.
