I noticed something completely strange just a few moments on boinc but first ill let u know about my laptop and the hardware it has:

I have 4 cpu cores
Processor: 4 AuthenticAMD AMD FX-8800P Radeon R7, 12 Compute Cores 4C+8G [Family 21 Model 96 Stepping 1]
Its a AMD FX-8800P with an integrated Radeon R7.
The integrated GPU I don't use as it affects my cpu tasks in sense of heat. since no longer using the integrated gpu my temps are more in a stable and healthy amount

My discrete GPU that I use for GPU tasks is a Radeon R9 m385X

OpenCL: AMD/ATI GPU 0: AMD Radeon R7 Graphics (driver version 2236.10, device version OpenCL 2.0 AMD-APP (2236.10), 2559MB, 2559MB available, 819 GFLOPS peak)

OpenCL: AMD/ATI GPU 1: AMD Radeon (TM) R9 M385X (driver version 2236.10, device version OpenCL 2.0 AMD-APP (2236.10), 4096MB, 4096MB available, 1434 GFLOPS peak)

OS: Microsoft Windows 10: Core x64 Edition, (10.00.14393.00)
Memory: 14.96 GB physical, 29.96 GB virtual

I don't have hyper-V as I have the home version of windows 10

So at the moment boinc is running the following tasks

Cosmology@home 4 cpu core unit
Einstein@home 1cpu + 1 gpu
NFS@home 1cpu
NFS@home 1cpu

that's 7 cores when I only have 4 so that confuses me. This just started happening and I don't have a clue what to make of it. My cpu is only 4 cores + 8G 8g for the graphic i'm pretty sure since its integrated.

I do have app configs for the following
Einstein so it runs at most 2 tasks (1 cpu task and 1 cpu + 1 gpu task) -- done by app name max_concurrent and project_max_concurrent
Cosmology doesn't have a limit as it doesnt' seem to cause excessive heat
NFS@home is set to limit to 2 tasks with project_max_concurrent -- heat hound like enigma

My assumption is that cosmology is using all four cores as the times to finish are similar to when it runs by itself
NFS@home is taking a real long time which makes me think that its taking the left over scraps from cosmology.
Einstein is taking a little longer but not much as it only ever seems to use 20% of a core when its set to use up to a full core.

is there something that causes this? maybe something I can do to prevent such things

All we have is your word that says it runs those 7 tasks simultaneously on the CPU, you don't show it in the logs.
So turn on cpu_sched_debug in the Event Log Options.. window, then for clarity exit & restart BOINC, let it run for a minute or two, then copy the whole log and post that here. It would also be nice to know your activity setting (run always, or based on preferences) for CPU and GPU.

ok I got the info you wanted the log isn't as long as I would of liked as I took a screen shot and also hit the power button on a coffeeless morning by mistake. (why do they put buttons that close) I believe I found the general issue just need a solution ill post pics and the log. I don't have any cpu settings in configs. any and all settings I have are gpu. how do I reset the sched to fix the cpus count issue? I did remove the other projects thinking maybe they caused it lastnight.

I like running these projects at 100% as I never get a cpu temp over 60 and gpu stays at 63

Okay, your images are broken. But then I wasn't asking for the images anyway, I was asking for the event log, which you've given. Problem is, it runs for just 50 seconds, I asked for 2 minutes.

But...
Go back to Event Log Options... and
- Uncheck cpu_sched_debug
- Check rr_simulation
OK.

That does a round robin calculation on all the running tasks and all tasks in cache.
Depending on your cache, this may give quite a big log, so please don't run this for several minutes. One round of several seconds should be enough. RR is calculated every minute or so. Again, do not make a screen shot, but instead post that part of the Event Log (CTRL+SHIFT+E).

Uncheck rr_simulation
Check checkpoint_debug
Check cpu_sched
OK

After OK, do File->Exit->if asked to stop the running client->OK
Start->(All) Programs->BOINC->BOINC Manager

Next wait for it to load fully.
SHIFT+ALT+E->select all->post that.

well strangely after I did those options and restart boinc it has gone back to normal. i'll show u the info as requested and if it happens again in future ill update this post. strange for sure as ive restarted it a few times before without any results. *cheers*

Well, one thing. One of your ATLAS tasks looks to be multithreaded, it will try to use all 4 cores, <code>ATLAS@home | [rr_sim] 146145.28: fA7NDmrzznpnDDn7oo6G73TpABFKDmABFKDm2RFKDmABFKDmRPeSQo_0 finishes (4.00 CPU) (207000.00G/12.79G)</code>, that may be a problem if you set an app_config.xml to use only part of the CPU for that project.

I don't have a app_config.xml for atlas at all or moowrap.

I did have one for the previous projects that I don't have anymore (as they generated more cpu heat I limited the max concurrent project tasks to 1) which helped lower the heat quite a bit.

I have a app config for Einstein as I occasionally still get a cpu task from them as well but ive had it for awhile

that allows one cpu task from them to run but also allow the gpu tasks to run.

yes I receive multicore tasks from atlas and don't mind running them but usually when those run only moowrap will run on the gpu as moowrap uses 0.25 cpu. then when it switches to single core atlas tasks Einstein kicks in its 1 cpu + 1 gpu tasks.

I think maybe boinc got confused some where down the line an took awhile to get things straightened out. this machine is my laptop so I like to keep her as cool as possible (which I have to extra cooler fans blowing in to help.

Just ordering stuff atm to get my other tower back up and running with a new gpu and then work on possibly building a custom cluster as a fun project.

got an 1 cpu + 1 gpu task running for Einstein and a multicore 4 core atlas app. I realised I had cpu time at 100% and didn't give any play to the Einstein and even affected moo wrap with its usual 0.25 cpu + 1 gpu.

I moved it to 75% cpu time and now even thou atlas has a multi 4 core app running and an Einstein task its ripping through both without an issue. its fine as it is now. guess the extra 25% helps where its short for other tasks. peace out n thanks

I have similar problem. Now BOINC is running one Cosmology@Home task (vbox, 8 CPU), one rosetta@home task (1 CPU) and 4 MilkyWay@Home (reconfigured using app_config.xml to use 0.5 CPU + 0.5 GPU), and I have 8 CPU cores. Few days ago I also noticed something similar when r@h task was overbooked too, but at that time I thought that tasks at high priority uses different rules. If I remember correctly, at that time I was also running YAFU task (8CPU, mt). BTW, today r@h also runs on high priority, maybe this is somehow important here. Looks that this is some bug in last Windows version of BOINC (7.6.33), before upgrade I saw only fractional overbooking (<1CPU).

thanks for the info its nice to see someone else experiencing a similar problem. It happened again a little while ago and It went away again so I didn't bother posting again as it was just there and gone awhile later.

I been looking on a side note to find a way to dedicate a cpu core to my 2 gpus and have boinc only use 3 cpus of the 4 for cpu tasks.

I could be wrong but I have a feeling that multi-threaded tasks are allowed to overcommit CPU. If it is so, it's probably because it would otherwise be hard to find a slot for them. The client likes to swap tasks just after they have used their time slice but it's pretty unlikely that many tasks would finish their time slice at same time after the client has been running for a while.

It's usually better to start a new thread for new questions. Otherwise they may get lost in the noise.

Since you run multi-threaded tasks you'd need to set the client to use 75% of CPUs in computing preferences. If the GPU tasks use in total more than one CPU you can limit their apparent CPU usage with app_config.xml .

okay I was just in the research phase that I do before I ask a question. but i'll def try that 75% idea I thought about it but I thought it would of eliminated a cpu core from being available for both cpu and gpu but good call thanks

You can also create app_config.xml for this app and specify there that app requires 0.5 CPU and 1.0 GPU. This is probably better than reducing CPU count to 75%, at least is used to be for older BOINC Client version.

Example app_config.xml, app name is from GPUGRID:

If the project's multi-core applications are written using the supported multi-threading tools, the number of cores they use can be controlled by using the --nthreads parameter on the command line, as shown in the extended format for app_config.xml in the application configuration documentation.
