I've recently reinstalled BOINC on a MacBook Pro running El Capitan 10.11.6.

If I close the laptop when BOINC is running, instead of sleeping, it continues to run closed.

I assume this is not expected behavior. Any ideas on how to stop this?

Check "Energy Saver" under your System Preferences to make sure it's not set to do that...

I guess then I have to disable "Power Nap" to prevent BOINC from staying active.

Thanks SekeRob--I hadn't even realized that the BOINC manager had its own local preferences.

I turned out the BOINC behavior had nothing to do with the Power Nap preference under energy settings--even with that disabled, it would still run with the cover closed.

BOINC preferences only apply to the computation, there is no way for it to override the power management functions of your operating system. If the computer does not go to sleep when the lid is closed, there is a preference in the OS settings or something preventing it from going to sleep like a connected device.

I recently had this happen on my laptop - after a Windows update it stopped going into sleep or hibernating when the lid was shut. The laptop is not used fro BOINC work. The result is I have to be far more aware of where I can get it charged when out on the road. I think its a conspiracy by the battery manufacturers and MS to.......
