Can I run BOINC at work? How can I persuade my boss it's safe? This is a question that someone has asked me recently and frankly I didn't feel qualified enough to answer either question. So I thought I'd put the question to the community to see what you all say and then I can go back to them with a reasonable solution and answer to both questions. Anyone have any ideas? |

You can run BOINC on work or friends' computers, so long as you have their permission. As for how you'd convince someone that it's safe, that's outside of my area of expertise; I know that WCG has been hailed as a much more secure project than others because IBM has put in some of their expertise on the security component. It's secure enough that they run it on all their corporate machines. My Detailed BOINC Stats |

Three problems with running BOINC: It uses up all spare clock cycles, and so the power bill goes up. The constant running will generate more heat, which may shorten the life of the computer. You can't use the GPU to crunch, because this may lead to erratic behaviour in the display when it's used for work. |
