recently upgraded to boinc 7.6.22 on my 2 win7 pro machines. long story short, boinc manager won't start from the taskbar. the icon lights up a little and the circle spins for a few seconds, then nothing.

didn't have the problem with the previous versions, nor do I have the problem on my win7 home machine running boinc 7.2.42.

??????????????

Perhaps this time we do need the long story?

But...

Are you sure it's not already running?
What does Windows Task Manager say in the Processes tab?

Hello, Ageless... long time, no problems.

First, a little background. As a general rule, I never modify an installation process. However a program - including BOINC - wants to install itself is okay by me.

Yes, BOINC is running in the background just as it installed itself. I prefer to put an icon on the taskbar to make the manager easier to open - as opposed to start - to do whatever needs doing.

In previous iterations, clicking on the taskbar icon would re-open the manager. Now, after installing 7.6.22, the icon I've placed on the taskbar doesn't open the manager. It gets brighter for a second or two while the little circle spins, then nothing. I suspect it is trying to start BOINC as opposed to simply opening the manager but when it finds BOINC already running, it just goes back to sleep.

The icon works fine on my third machine, by the way, just as it did on the other two pre-7.6.22 installs.

This whole thing simply screams "PERMISSIONS" to me, but I just don't know for sure.

I get that in the wide sweep of geopolitical events this isn't a big deal, but I do have a concern. if this version has an issue taking input from an icon on the taskbar, does it perhaps have other, more critical issues?

As always, thanks for your help. You do good work.

Ah, I hate pinning things to the task bar, as then you never know if they're running or not. I use the launch bar instead.

But that aside, when you look in Windows Task Manager (right-click on the task bar->Start Task Manager, in the window that opens click the Processes tab) is the boincmgr.exe process running? If so, how many times? What if you click on it/them and click End Process->Acknowledge, then try to run your BOINC Manager once?

Also, what if you right-click on the BOINC icon, do you have a "Restore"? If you do, try to click that.

One other possibility is that it crashes and leaves some info about that in stderrgui.txt, which can be found in Start->in Search type %APPDATA%/BOINC and hit Enter. (full link is C:\Users\User name\AppData\Roaming\BOINC)
