Hi,
I have the latest boinc, 7.6.22, with the Oracle VM virtual box installed.
I have uninstalled and re-installed boinc numerous times and even taken a break for a few months in between installs.

I have boinc set to suspend while the computer is in use.
After a few hours of processing and no human intervention, over night lets say I'll try and wake the computer which it does but I find I'm not able to type as I would normally I have to press each key for about half a second then go onto the next one. I'm not a speed typist and don't even use the home keys (yes I have had some training) but am not a very fast typist.
Anyway if I re-boot I'm able to type as I would normally.
I have tried uninstalling all other applications and testing but it always comes back to Boinc.

Has anyone else experienced this and what can I do to rectify it.
I'm currently using Windows 10
Typing is affected in Google Chrome, Explorer, MS Word,Notepad. Online and local applications!
I've tried using an account manager and not (currently running local preferences).
If anyone can help and wants log files or anything else please let me know as I like having Boinc using my machine for good while I'm not, and want to continue.

Thanks in advance
Dean

Sounds like you have a lack of memory problem, where the system is so busy and maybe swapping to the drive, that it cannot output the keyboard buffer quickly enough for you to see.

How much memory do you have?
Which projects do you run?
On what kind of system?

Can you please post the first 40 to 100 lines from the BOINC Event Log (CTRL+SHIFT+E) after a BOINC start? That'll show us a lot of information.

You have a GPU, is any work running on it?
You can check that in BOINC Manager->View->Advanced view->Tasks->Status.
If anything here shows something alike Running (0.04 CPUs + 1 AMD/ATI GPU) then your GPU is being used for calculations, which indeed can cause slowdowns.

That's why the default setting for the GPU is to only be used when the computer is idle, aka no one at the keyboard or mouse for an N amount of time.

25/02/2016 16:59:26 | | Reading preferences override file

Since you are using the local preferences, please go to Options->Computing Preferences->Computing->check "Suspend GPU computing when computer is in use"->click OK.

Make sure that Activity shows "Use GPU based on preferences".

Test with that please and report back if that stops your system from slowing down.

Hi,

It is usually set "Run Based on Preferences" for all three settings but I had turned it to "Run Always" for testing and had not switched it back.
Anyway, yes set all to "Run based on Preferences" again.

Seti@Home is the only task that is using GPU.

I'll leave like this for tonight and look again tomorrow.
I have also altered my machines screen saver settings so as to not turn the monitor off (set it back to default).

Hi,

Nope still doing the same. I'm currently running Malwarebytes but don't expect it to find/cure anything as I've run it a few times before.

Ive also run HiJackthis and don't see anything that I can't explain.

Question about VirtualBox, how do I know Boinc is running in a virtual machine?
Would it be better if I re-installed Boinc as a service?

Can you suggest anything else to look at?

Have you checked Windows Task Manager if there is any process on the loose?

I'm just wondering, the VirtualBox version you have is only for Cosmology, right? I'm not so sure if their application that runs in VBox does so well on only 1 CPU core, but that's something you should ask Marius on their forums.

Although I do see in their FAQ that it's a known issue, that computers slow down. However, you still may want to ask if you should run this application of theirs on just 1 or 2 cores. Especially since you seem to limit BOINC to run applications on just one of the two cores.

Hi,

Sorry for the delay in replying, been giving it a while anyway still troubled.
I have taken Ageless's statement a bit further and have uninsalled both VM and Boinc and re-booted, then re-installed Boinc on it's own and then removed the Cosmology project.
And still have issue.

I have looked at Taskmanager a few times but not seen anything that stood out as being wrong but am not really sure what I'd be looking for. I do know that there are to processes for Boinc and then I think there should be one for each of the running tasks?
Currently Boinc Client is running at 0.2-0.5% CPU and the System tray icon is at 0% and I can see 4 processes that I think are the apps and each appear to be 0% CPU, waiting for the user activity to end!

I'm struggling to type this as I'm having to go back and correct it all the time and trying to type slower than I normally would.

Those show it isn't BOINC then.
Have you checked further in Task Manager Processes (perhaps with show all users), what takes up the CPU?
What kind of anti virus do you have, could it be aggressively interfering?

One thing I noticed.
max memory usage when active: 77.78MB

I wonder if that being so small and/or "leave apps in memory" enabled might cause it. Every time he uses the machine it would have to page the apps out.

And there you have the problem .. In my case I have the same issue . Running a GPU workunit while using the computer will lead to a severe slowdown (laggy graphics , and slow typing)

In my case I set the Manager to use the GPU only when the computer has been idle (no mouse / keyboard action) for 3 minutes and solved the issue .

Thanks for all the help.
It's still not 100% resolved but this is where I'm at:-
Uninstalled everything.
Left a couple of days and all was working fine.

Reinstalled Boinc (not using the VM).
Removed all the projects.
Left a couple of days and all was working fine(Boinc telling me I had no attached projects, but I knew this and it was good to see it confirmed).

Re-attached the Seti@home project (And reset the default settings on the website), but still have it using the local settings set on my machine.
This has now been working for about a week, one project, screen saver and no issues....

I'll leave it a few more days and then attach another project, one at a time and slowly to see if any one project gives issues or just the number of projects running.

Will update again later
