Are you like my friend Ronnie? He used to zap any electronic part he picked up. It was either his body or his clothing that was different. I don't think carpet is a problem. I've got carpet here and I've never zapped a thing. Never felt a shock myself either. I never bothered with those anti-static straps, I used to just touch an earthed computer case first, now I don't even bother with that. Modern stuff has diode protection from static.I get static shocks from my car each time I step out. Lost the rubber thingy underneath the car, still have to get a new one but that can wait. There's anti-static carpet, but that's not as nicely soft and fluffy as the other stuff. The other stuff can get get you static, unless you walk barefooted all day. Touching a grounded case? Why do so difficult. When you build a system, plug the PSU into an earthed power outlet, leave it off. Connect your anti-static wrist band to the PSU and put the other end around your bare ankle. That way you have normal movement and you're protected. I see there are TVS diodes that can absorb large amounts of ESD, and they do appear on motherboards. But then mostly behind audio, USB and network ports, so it takes the ESD from anything you plug in from external, not so much for you touching the motherboard with your bare hands and a statically charged body. And your CPU doesn't have them either. As for my floor, the stuff I put down was click. Didn't help me much. I can blindfolded take a computer apart and rebuild it into a working work of art. I cannot lay laminate. |

I get static shocks from my car each time I step out. Lost the rubber thingy underneath the car, still have to get a new one but that can wait. I did a long time ago, then it stopped. I assumed modern cars don't have that problem somehow. By modern I mean post 1995 manufacture, my current car is only 2002. There's anti-static carpet, but that's not as nicely soft and fluffy as the other stuff. The other stuff can get get you static, unless you walk barefooted all day. It doesn't with me. Maybe it depends on your shoes/socks/slippers? I used to work at a university where they supplied the shoes - steel toe caps as we carried heavy stuff around, and they were also antistatic. But at home, either barefoot, socks, or sandals, still no problem. Then again, what is the humidity where you live? I'm in Scotland which is 50% to 80%. Static doesn't happen in humid conditions. Touching a grounded case? Why do so difficult. When you build a system, plug the PSU into an earthed power outlet, leave it off. Connect your anti-static wrist band to the PSU and put the other end around your bare ankle. That way you have normal movement and you're protected. The ankle is a good idea. But I always found it easier just to touch the case before starting, no wiring up required. And I didn't have to repeat it, since static can only build up if I walk around. Didn't you ever walk off and forget, then trip yourself up? I see there are TVS diodes that can absorb large amounts of ESD, and they do appear on motherboards. But then mostly behind audio, USB and network ports, so it takes the ESD from anything you plug in from external, not so much for you touching the motherboard with your bare hands and a statically charged body. And your CPU doesn't have them either. I read about them on RAM sticks. I don't know the details. |

I put something called deluxe vinyl flooring in my kitchen. It is a tongue and groove cork wood. It looks and feels like the real thing and is more durable, 30yr warranty for residential, 15yrs for commercial. Depends how much you get it wet, I just use carpet. |

Depends how much you get it wet, I just use carpet. That's what I meant, if you don't spill much water, you're better with carpet like I do. Much softer. |

I had one hand resting on the computer (earthed) and touched the plug with my other hand. I got a mild shock. Concerned this would damage the computer, I compared the voltage of the plug with earth using a multimeter and got 80V AC! The current was bugger all though, but I assume not much is needed to zap a chip. Wherever it was coming from must have been very badly designed. I did plug it in, and the computer didn't die. |

A thread to post your positive and negative thoughts into. Doesn't matter really what on, or whom on. No flames, please. And if you don't mind, no signatures either.Just a friendly reminder for those who forget, you can uncheck "Add my signature to this reply" on each post. Please do so for this thread. Want to brag how well you're doing in the stats? Do it elsewhere. |

If you don't want sigs, don't provide the option. I'm not going to post differently for every thread.I've asked friendly. Don't be a menace just because you're too lazy to just click on the option not to show the signature a second before you click Post reply. Just because we give the option doesn't mean you have to use it everywhere. Stop doing so in this thread or I will give you a 24 hour time out to reflect upon your options. |

I'm not being a menace, I've used an option provided to me by the forums. If you don't like it, why is it there? Why should I have to read the terms and conditions for every single thread? This is one of the most relaxed threads and the least likely place I expect rules. There is no way I can remember to uncheck the box for this thread. Your request is denied. Please think about more important things in life. I pay for the electricity to provide the computing power, people should respect that or I'll go off and do something else with it. |

Had that static issue at one place a long long time ago. Finally figured it out. The ladies were wearing nylon and polyester. Zap every time. The guys were wearing denim. Answer in the office was somewhat pricey anti-static chair carpet protectors which had a ground wire. Never had another issue. You might check the fabric content of your wardrobe. The other thing you might try is a room humidifier. Are you like my friend Ronnie? He used to zap any electronic part he picked up. It was either his body or his clothing that was different.
