Interesting article from May 2014 about the emergence of SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV, both predecessors of COVID-19: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4019136/

Always from animals, always from the East. Westernised vegetarians don't cause these problems.

How did I get tagged as a help desk expert and volunteer tester? I don't remember for signing up to that.

The dictatorship government is signing people up to do their will. If they need you to do some farming, you will do it, whether you like it or not.

I bet you £50,000 I never get signed up to do it. I'm an arrogant prick.

Since distributed computing is pretty much an anarchy I pretty much doubt that.

I wish we could replace government with anarchy.

Perhaps someone thought you were a wonderful candidate for keeping people like me in line? You now have the power to delete all my messages. Or maybe everyone gets that status if they make enough posts. Right, let's get my score up, I could cause mayhem as an admin!

Some do wish for the life before the babylonian empire.

It's just an honorary label given to those who have been helpful for a while.
It can be made to disappear if you don't want it, just by saying so a few times.
Then it'll be gone again, like dew drops in the morning sun.

As I once explained to a policeman, that's just fiction. Reality wouldn't pan out the same way.

The policeman was trying to book me for having a crack in my number plate, he said it could fly off and slice somebody's head off. I told him (using a few rude terms) that he shouldn't assume reality would be the same as a Hollywood movie. This made him very angry. I ended up negotiating and had to replace it within 2 weeks, but no fine. You can even get off with speeding offences 3/4s of the time if you discuss or argue enough with them.

Funny that. The plague originated in Africa.

Is this automated by counting messages in certain threads, or does somebody decide the posts were useful?

Does "made to disappear" mean saying "I don't want it"? Or do you mean by breaking some forum rules?

[raises hand]

"Me sir!"

We could always have it on the voting ballot as "none". If enough vote for no government, they go away.

Firstly when I said East I was referring to "less civilised places", so including Africa.

Secondly I bet meat was involved in the plague.

The interesting question from all of this is "How do we prevent it happening again"
Looking at the way the virus was originally transmitted it would appear unrestricted air travel was the main cause.
Governments were not prepared.
Personally I suspect we have seen the end of free movement around the world. Unless we can come up with a way to predict this sort of pandemic, and quickly come up with a cure, unrestricted air travel is likely to cause it to happen again and again.
That's all good & well to prevent transmission on a continental level, but what about on a national level?
It will also take a long time for the "social distancing" mindset to pass from the collective consciousness.
How about 300 years?
The 40 day quarantine for the plague was rigorously established and completely successful for 300 years. It corresponds with the long incubation period that has been established for the plagues of Europe.
Four metres was established as a safe distance of separation out of doors.

I am 69 this month, and have a strong feeling the world has changed and it will never return to the way it was in my lifetime.
Only if those in control realise that what worked well in the past can be very effective today.
Personally, I think that will be an impossibility.

Not even possible since we all have to touch things others have touched, like food, doorhandles, etc.

Depends on the wind, I saw a report somewhere that it's a lot further than that. Imagine yourself sneezing outdoors. Now think where that sneeze gets to if there's even a gentle breeze.

Now consider sneezing indoors, I bet you fill the whole room with at least some droplets.

Ok, so you found the exception that proves the rule :-)

But SARS and Corona could have been stopped by not eating meat, certainly not eating meat from the weird Chinese markets.

By the way, it's all a fuss about nothing. 99% of deaths (at any age) have been for people with underlying medical conditions. And those under 18 hardly die at all. Here's the stats from New York City for example - first table on the page: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/coronavirus-age-sex-demographics/
