Grrr, Windows Update.
I installed the Monthly Rollup for Windows 7, rebooted.
Reboot took exceptionally long.
Upon entering Windows, it told me it was making a temporary swap file because the one in my original location wasn't there....

I had moved my swap file to the SSD.
And three of my active games as well.

Both partitions on the SSD were showing as 'empty string' in Windows Explorer.
So I ran CHKDSK on them. That fixed a lot of things... but removed the security descriptor.

So now I had two partitions back that I still couldn't access. Had to retake ownership of them, which wasn't easy.
But they're back. Immediately backing them up. :)

What the heck was in that Windows Update that broke my SSD?
And is this going to be a monthly thing now?

BOINC is a platform for high-throughput computing on a large scale (thousands or millions of computers). It can be used for volunteer computing(using consumer devices)or grid computing (using organizational resources).
It supports virtualized, parallel, and GPU-based applications.

Oh, forget the users here, for also scientific results and achievements we sometimes could end up with, for just obtaining,
except for perhaps not any member of any club myself, for perhaps interpreting a possible meaning.

I've said I will stay on on these forums for now, but that may come to an end as well, I haven't decided yet.
I have decided to stay on here. I know this will come as a crushing blow to some out there. Things are looking up in my personal life as well. What a night out with a friend doesn't do. I'll only refrain from returning the BOINC development for now. It doesn't strike me as if anyone's been missing me there anyway, so that's all right with me.

A new (to me) scam today. - Email that appears to be from my own business account to that account claiming to have hacked my system, taken screenshots of my dubious activitees and copied my hard disk and so have details of all my contacts etc. Also contained instruction as to how to pay a not inconsiderable sum to scammer's bitcoin account.

whois 81.15.225.155 gave me the name of someone working for a company in Poland when I looked at the headers. Company and person seem genuine so either he is doing his hacking from work, his work account has been hacked or there is spoofing beyond my #hackingpaygrade going on.

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
f'n updates now mission critical software is borked.
looks like I have to rip out the free A/V product the so called IT person put on the machine
he also couldn't install the mission critical component correct because he was so lazy he did it in "default" mode. That has been fixed for a long time.

OBW the mission critical SW has message to remove that A/V software and a link to the A/V vendor's PAY support line if you want to try and use it. Guess a lot of people are borked!

f'n mess.

Sigh.

PETA don't know their fundament from their funny bone. Many of the things they advocate would result in animal cruelty.

Can't remember where but I read another piece suggesting some of these sayings might become less common as a result of vegetarianism and veganism and many jumped on it claiming vegans wanted to ban these sayings. Not surprised about PETA though.

Mess worse. seems that the update process has stopped working but the user isn't allowed to know that! GRRRRRRR the last update for the mission critical application may require an O/S update that the update process has stopped working and won't bother and tell the user it is broken! GRRRRRRRRRRRRR OBW it happily reports it as working, unless you attempt a manual update! Never mind it is set on automagic.

Mission critical still broken and being used in a cripple mode. Still claims a program that doesn't have a firewall has a firewall and is blocking ports. GRRRRRRRRRRRRR

On the good news front got a PDU installed this AM. Installing the PDU also meant running out of ports on the router, so a switch had to be put in as well. After going a bit crazy it was found that there was a wonky cat 5 cable between the router and the modem. You can't install stuff without bumping some other thing! You know it is bad when you get a link light at both ends but can't move data on the cable!

Two glorious switches now available. One to fix idiots who can make security camera's that stay in the mode you set them so they need a power cycle or they suddenly put menus on the screen without anyone touching them. The other to make sure the router gets a swift kick when it wedges about every month. Thank you Google for having a high availability ping and I hope once every couple of minutes isn't too much load.

Saturday the pull on the zipper on my favorite winter jacket failed. Yesterday I went to the store where I purchased it 10 years ago. While looking around for a replacement I noticed a sign saying "All Eddie Bauer products have a life time warranty" I enquired about it. 5 minutes later I walked out with the current model of that jacket with zero cost to me.
Cheers to Eddie Bauer and a big win for me.

Gaming PCs going out? Linus says so.
If you order Shadow's service, you get a small 7 Watt Linux client at your home which streams the gaming from their independent servers, which each contain: 16 CPU cores, 48GB of RAM and 4 performance grade GPUs, typically GTX 1080s or Quadro P5000s, running Redhat's KVM on Linux.

($35.- a month, comes with a gigabit internet connection)

You no longer can trust a that photograph is real...
“None of these faces are real. All made up by AIs. The end of photography as evidence,” declared author and Wired founding executive editor Kevin Kelly in a Twitter post, citing research from Nvidia.

“These realistic faces are the work of researchers from Nvidia. In their paper, shared publicly last week, they describe modifying the basic GAN architecture to create these images,” reported the Verge on the same images. “Take a look at the pictures below. If you didn’t know they were fake, could you tell the difference?”

I can't change the people authorized to sign on the account. I don't have any paperwork on the account. Is it a corporation? I'll need the articles of incorporation. Oh yes I see the account was opened 74 years ago. But we don't have any records of it. We don't have any signature cards. Four hours later the two bank accounts are set to be updated in the next day or so, however the safety deposit box can't be updated until after the bank accounts are updated by the back office.

Grmbl, Windows (7)

Does anyone know how to tell Windows to stop renumbering my monitors? I have bought a 28 inch Samsung UHD today to complement my 32 inch AOC UHD. The AOC has been on my desk since some months now and had a BenQ HD monitor as its companion. AOC monitor nr. 1 (HDMI 2.1), BenQ monitor nr. 2 (DVI)

Today I shut down, disconnected the BenQ and put the Samsung (Displayport) in its place, booted up. Bam, the Samsung was immediately monitor nr. 1 and the AOC is monitor nr. 2
Problem with that set up is that the AOC is on the left, Samsung is on the right. I've set the AOC to be main monitor, but really would want it to be monitor nr. 1 again.

I tried moving cables around.
I tried putting the AOC on HDMI port 1 on the GPU, as it was living on port 2.
I tried moving the image of minitor 2 to the right in Display -> Screen Resolution.
- While that shows the images there as 1 & 2, pressing Identify shows 2 still on the left. Aside from that, to get to the second monitor, one has to leave the left side of the left monitor to get to the right side of the right one... yes... stuff dreams are made of.

Other than physically putting the AOC on the right, I don't see how to do this. Anyone?

I've used multiple monitors since Windows 98, so here goes. Some of this is theory, because I don't want to mess up my monitors now I've got them the way I like, but I am typing on Windows 7, and I have the monitor control window open on the other screen, so we should be good to go.

Right-click on an unoccupied area of open desktop, and choose 'Screen Resolution' (third from bottom)
In monitor display box, click 'Detect'. This is usually the first thing to try when things go screwy - if you boot the machine with a monitor disconnected, that monitor may not show, but reconnecting it, then 'Detect', usually restores normality.
Select the monitor you wish to make your main display, and tick the 'Make this my main display'.
Click the 'Apply' button. The taskbar should move immediately to the screen you chose, but any desktop icons may still be all over the place.
Do a machine restart, while keeping your fingers crossed on both hands.
See how it comes back up.

If the monitors are right, start tidying up the icons. If not, come back and have another grumble.

I already set the AOC - as monitor 2 - as my main display. But that's not what I wanted. What I want is for the AOC to be monitor 1 again. Just as it was when it was paired with the BenQ. If only I could find my other DisplayPort cable, then I could try to switch the AOC from HDMI to DP and see if that fixes things. But I doubt it.
