Message 92626 - Posted: 28 Aug 2019, 16:21:22 UTC - in response to Message 92624.

Jord discovered, late on a Friday afternoon, that data was being transferred horribly slowly from device to device (phone to tablet? Something like that) and he wanted to free up space before the following morning. Both devices had USB-C sockets, but neither of us had a cable to hand. By the time we'd scratched our heads, compared prices etc., it was nearly 18:30 - which cuts down the 'same day collection' options quite severely.

To my surprise, the UK retail chain 'PC-World' had one at a reasonable price, and in stock at the second-nearest branch. So we took a quick hop across the moor to Guiseley, in contraflow to the remains of the evening rush hour. And back in time for dinner.

Getting another beta in again, it's going to be exciting. Can't say anything about it, am under NDA again. Download happening with 31.4MB/sec. Yay!

After much struggling with instructions on different websites, the simple expedient of using foomatic and a Windows ppd worked.

Edit: And installing the downloaded driver, could really have done without having to press enter 37 times to see one line MORE of agreement before finally reaching the y/n point. to accept or not. Holding down enter key results in installation being aborted at the end.

Bought a new printer a couple of weeks ago, to replace the HP 2540 which was dropping off the network for unknown reasons (it otherwise works fine...). Got a HP 2630 to replace it, uninstalled the previous printer, installed the new. All fine you'd think, but for that each time I tried printing something from Firefox, I'd get a warning that the paper size was set to Letter.

So I changed the paper size in Windows, properties of the printer, to A4.
Firefox still wanted to print in Letter.
Changed the paper size to A4 in the Firefox printer properties as well. Which works fine until you exit Firefox, then restart it and print something new... which it does in Letter.

So tonight I changed the height and width values in about:config for the printer, as well as the paper_unit value, to represent the A4 format. Now finally Firefox prints to A4 by default. But where, why, how it got set to Letter in the first place, I still don't know. Annoying grumble worthy though.

Grumble. My email provider, British Telecom, subcontracts its email service to Yahoo. BT says Yahoo is experiencing a global outage - but I'm not their customer, so I've got nobody to send a complaint email to. Even if I could send it...

So, no email receipts here. Find another way.

Later - email is visible again, though my inbox is mercifully quiet. The problem has been noticed:

Come On Ziggo, can't you do anything right these days?
Tonight, as I was home alone anyway, I thought I'd quickly switch out the broken modem for the new one... three hours later, still no internet connection, no telephone, no network, only TV worked. Switched the old broken modem back into my network and immediately have internet, network, telephone.

So I think they sent me a faulty modem.
And that 3 days before my vacation starts. I hope they can stop it that the old modem's signal stops after 14 days, because otherwise the house will be without internet during my vacation. Shrug.

Of all things to go south, the power strip. After a couple years good service. Shorting out. Unfortunately it took out a UPS. At least the computer rebooted and the drives came up and it didn't burn the place down.
I thought they were supposed to have circuit breakers.

If I feel motivated, I may tear it open to see what happened. MOV failure? Did they wire the MOV ahead of the breaker?! Strain relief failure? That is common despite UL giving its blessing to those crimp strain relief clamps.

Well, at least it is crunching again.

Glory: actually found 100% what component has been giving power problems. If finally went down for good!

Grumble: yes it was a power strip, a different one than I first thought.

Beyond grumble, ransomware and I don't have a sata external case to use Linux to attempt cleaning

I turned 50 some six and a half hours ago. 😁πŸ₯³πŸŽ‚πŸΎπŸŽ‰πŸŽŠπŸŽˆπŸŽ€πŸŽ

None of you noticed. πŸ§πŸ™„πŸ˜‘πŸ˜ πŸ€¬

And then my mom called with bitter news about her health. I should not worry about her. So then I tried calling the nurses who in trying to put me through to the right person hung up on me three times. I then gave up, they apparently don't want me to call. 😲🀯

Yeah didn't see the need for it anymore. Had my birthday, turned 50, told all about it, and none of you here congratulated me.
That hurt.

So, from here on in I will never set foot in The Lounge again, just as I perfectly manage to ignore most forums on Seti - or indeed most project forums. Bye f'ers.

It is a well know fact that on the 50th one no longer has a birthday but instead has a commemorative.
