Another grumble:
Firefox needs to restart message > clicked on icon to restart updated Firefox, it opens on laptop but no pages load. Same update works fine on Desktop. Also works for a second user added to test this on laptop. I expect copying .firefox from Desktop to laptop will fix it but still a pain!

A lightning strike some 40 yards away from me took out my modem last night. I have partial WiFi but all hardwired ports are non-functional. My ISP is sending me a new modem, which can take several days.

Because of that setup that means I have no network either, can't reach the NAS. So I am setting up a new Asus router which is fighting me tooth and nail.

For the moment, the Asus router is off line again. Instead I've bought two Wifi/USB TP-Link W812n adapters and got two systems connected via those. The other one (my system) uses the old Netgear W111v2, at least we have connections to the internet. Not good for gaming, but we can stream Youtube and Netflix. As long as a certain person doesn't hog all bandwidth with her downloads. :)

Good news: the NAS survived. I was afraid it might've gotten a hit as well as it wasn't to be found on the network, not even after resetting it. Powering down and back up fixed that. It's only on the wired network, thus on the Asus router. Which means we can't use it really, because Windows 7 doesn't like it when both wireless and wired networks are used simultaneouslty, heck even the Linux H. uses doesn't like that. But at least I sleep better now, knowing the NAS still lives, as do all hard drives in it. All 8TB of data is safe.

Grumble, a piledriver has been at work 1/2 mile from my house, 8 hrs a day for this last week, very noisey.
Associated glory, the reason it is happening is a culvert which restricts salmon spawning is being replaced by a bridge so the stream will be usable by the fish.

New modem is in, activated it and have now for the past hour been busy trying to get all computers on the network to talk to each other. Where most all just went and worked together and are seen as a network in the router, my computer ignores everything, is on its own network and while it has internet and all, it refuses to talk to the rest on the network. Am about to throw this box out the window.

Finally fixed that. For future reference, when met by the error The specified network provider name is invalid reinstall the network adapter you just uninstalled, and make sure that the Client for Microsoft Networks is installed on it, reboot and everything should work fine. Then instead of uninstalling the adapter, just disable it. Only took 3 hours, pah.

Setting up a new 8 port switch together with the Asus router set up as an access point. For the moment then, until I have figured out how I want my network to be.
Glad I took a switch that I can set up, but hell was it difficult to get onto the router. In the end I just had to connect my PC directly to it and change my IP address to match it before I could do things on it. Waiting now for the AP to show up in the network.

Grumble, had a good grumble written a couple days ago and I seem to have gotten so distracted somehow, post reply wasn't pressed!

Grumble, jack...er donkey in Texas thinks his Texas license is valid in California. Sorry, you are a nobody in California. Doesn't matter if you have a Federal Contract, you are still a nobody. And you don't have access to the CA EDRS system which you need to, to preform your contract with the Feds.
Our company is only licensed to work with licensed establishments, and Texas is just a nobody no matter what Texas thinks. So Texas will have to hire a company with a California license, but he got himself in a catch 22. While he can hire a CA company, and they have to hire my company, he botched the chain of custody, because the Feds it assigned to him. That breaks the abandoned property chain because Texas isn't abandoning it. All well and good if he is just a nobody, he hires just like any other nobody would. But here comes part 2 of the catch 22. He isn't listed anywhere in the succession list in CA law H&S 7100 as being able to have control of the property under CA law! To get control he would actually have to go to a CA court and petition to get control. (It would be granted.) Now if he had the feds assign the CA license the property, then the abandoned property chain isn't broken as CA licenses can have abandoned property - they are listed in 7100, but nobodies can't. (Or the CA license could chose to treat the Feds as a POA and go that route which might be easier.) But if Texas has the feds do that assignment it likely breaks his contract with the Feds and he loses the job!

Now he could try and get a CA license. Well actually 2 licenses. One is for him personally and he can get that. The other is an establishment license. He needs an office in CA to get that one! (plus a couple other things, a prep room and a storage faclilty with he can contract with others in CA to "share")

Now just to get a couple of Vets taken care of we worked with a CA license to get things done, but neither of us is happy with the paperwork. The CA license says he is done with this guy and I don't blame him. I'm done with him too at least ever dealing with him directly.

Oh, the "property" is an indigent veteran's remains.

I had a driver crash on my Einstein box and the GTX1060 rapidly trashed 29 gravity wave tasks before I was able to restart the machine and recover the driver. That was not my intent.

I hate driver crash "and doze didn't quite completely recover" messages. Have to kill BOINC and restart doze to get things in order. And if not done correctly hundreds of W/U's will error for a missing GPU that is there.

Grumble:
Partner has a Lumia Windows phone which will lose apps such as Faceache which she doesn't use, Instagram and Whatsapp, the latter two which she does use.

I am going to have to trawl through the instructions to put Android 7.1 onto it.

Wish you luck with that. Probably won't be good for much else than call, text and basic web.

My Huawei P20 lite got the Android 9 update the other day. The first hour after installation my phone was slow opening things, but that's gotten better. BOINC & Seti are still running on it, so far so good. It's just that the phone seems to be getting hotter than before. But then environment temperatures are up as well, so I will keep an eye on it.

So far I like Android 9, even when it can be confusing at times.

Which is about all it will be good for next year without putting Android on it but it might stave off replacing it for another year. For actual calls and texting she uses a dumb phone.

The ex managed to fill a hard drive on the NAS to full capacity and of course she couldn't fix the problem. I've spent the past 2 hours manually removing files from the recycle folder, clearing up about 700GB. The ex states that she isn't using that much of the drive. Nah. Of the 4TB (3.63TB usable) she only using 2.38TB. Not much, nah.
