Adding project cosmology@home fails currently for me. So maybe it's down? |

[quote][quote] I wonder if Asteroids will be able to bounce back? Maybe they're down for the count. The project has always been a little unstable. I don't think it gets much support from its host university. S. Gaber |

NumberFields@Home is down with what appears to be a hard drive crash. The drive crashed again (keeps dropping into read-only mode). Reboots are not helping this time. We should have the new SSD installed sometime next week. |

Seems Einstein upload server may be down. Uploads have been intermittently failing for about the last 12 hours: 39012 Einstein@Home 01/17/21 12:01:47 PM [error] Error reported by file upload server: File uploads are temporarily disabled. |

I believe BOINC to be dead. I'm so sad; I was a BOINC cruncher since SETI. Recently I came across a Precision T7400. I could put 128gb RAM - albeit FB ECC PC6400 on a quad-channel board - & RAID 0 SSD into it. But why bother? BOINC is dead. |

SETI is down indefinitely, but BOINC is alive and well, and controlling lots of projects. |

I believe BOINC to be dead. What makes you think it is dead? Which projects are you connecting to? As Les has said, Boinc is alive and many people are crunching at a lot of highly worthwhile projects. |

I'm currently attached to: Einstein, Rosetta, WCG & LHC. That notwithstanding, the following projects listed in the BOINC projects-listing are essentially defunct: Asteroids BOINC@Tacc CSG Cosmology ... ETC. I'm not going to waste additional time of mine finding viable projects. The fact is that a significant number of BOINC projects - 2/3's ??? are not viable - in that there is NO activity on the respective BOINC-community message-boards. One project that I'd be interested in - Folding@Home - seems not to be part of the BOINC community. Whatever. I'm going to look into getting that Dell T7400 to run. That notwithstanding, nevertheless, all that, and whatnot: there's some issues w/ BOINC project participation. You BOINC-people look into that, I'll look into this, and we'll see where the twain shall meet. |

That notwithstanding, the following projects listed in the BOINC projects-listing are essentially defunct: It's an old problem. Closed projects remain for years in the list, new projects take a lot of time to enter in the list... If i'm not wrong it's an xml file that is released with every new version of client. But, sometimes, between new version there are months. Is it possible to update only this xml file?? |

Closed projects remain for years in the list, new projects take a lot of time to enter in the list. If the closed projects don't tell that they have closed (there is a projects email list they can email that to), nor the new projects say that they are new and in production, it's no wonder the developers don't know about these things. New projects that are still in alpha/beta stage will generally not be added to the projects list. If i'm not wrong it's an xml file that is released with every new version of client. No, the all_projects_list.xml file can be updated between BOINC releases, the client checks for an update and gets it in automatically on a regular basis. As long as people have updated the client to a version that does this, then. |

Is it possible to update only this xml file??A fresh copy of 'all_projects_list.xml' is fetched by your client every 14 days [*]. Whatever is contained in the most recent copy will be displayed by the 'attach to project' wizard in BOINC Manager. But most of the time, the new copy will be identical to the previous one. The file is updated by a human being, and it's their judgement and knowledge which determines whether a new project is deemed 'ready for the big time' after testing, or has finally died after a period of unresponsiveness. That information flow is often sparse. The same file [**] is used to drive the display at https://boinc.berkeley.edu/projects.php, so in theory that should be as up-to-date (or not) as the BOINC Manager display. * Unless you have an obscure and completely unrelated configuration flag set. Grumble. ** Strictly, a different version of the same file, and they should be updated together. But that process is also liable to human error. |

I'm not sure when the projects list is updated, but its accuracy depends on input from the science projects. BOINC itself has no control over them rather providing an advertising hoarding for projects that are using the BOINC environment. The BOINC project itslef does none of the computing, provides no server space, administration staff, science staff etc. to the science projects. Over the years there have been some very long-lived projects (SETI@Home being a prime example - where the initial goal has been reached, and the next goal is being sought/developed). Other projects have only lasted few months until either their goal was reached (a lot of graduate & post graduate "student" work comes in this category). Others have lost their funding, or have suffered major hardware failures (Asteroids comes into that category). But there are other projects that are continuing, CPND (one of the oldest), Einstein and Milkyway, WCG continue to run and deliver good results. Then there are projects like LHC which only run when needed, which can get a bit confusing. So, is BOINC dead, or is it still continuing to do what it has done for nearly 20 years - personally I would say it is continuing to do what it has done, and is probably going to continue to do so, however individual, independent, projects will come and go. |

So, create a thread in which volunteers (that are more "ready" to projects than developers) can report the closed projects is a bad idea? |

But, if i'm a "fresh" volunteer (without any experience) and i see the list of projects and connect to one, i'm happy if this project is not closed... Otherwise i connect to Science United. |

Projects which have closed down usually - eventually - make that visible publicly. Either they post a polite notice of thanks on their website, or their domain registration lapses and gets taken over by a spammer. If the closed projects don't tell that they have closed (there is a projects email list they can email that to), nor the new projects say that they are new and in production, it's no wonder the developers don't know about these things. If you come across one of those, it's worth posting the information to the mailing list Jord mentioned. But a message board thread is an inefficient tool in those circumstances - the people you most want to be aware of and act on the information, are the least likely to read it here. |

Either they post a polite notice of thanks on their website, or their domain registration lapses and gets taken over by a spammer. A lot of times, admins of closed project forget to make that visible and server remain on-line.....for nothing!! For example, the last message from Citizen Science Grid admin is March 2019 and the last wus are 3 years ago. And the project is still in the list. Where?? If the message board is inefficient, i think also mailing list is not so good. |
