Message 60455 - Posted: 21 Feb 2015, 22:47:18 UTC

I am trying to download WUs into LinuxMint 17.1 Cinnamon 64-bit with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 GPU.
None of the Projects recognize the NVIDIA GPU.

Everything I have tried resulted in reinstalling LM. Since I am not a Linux Guru, I can use any help that is available.

I tried:
sudo service boinc-client restart

but this code has not helped initiating a WU download.

The Driver Manager reports xserver-xorg-video-nouveau installed.

Thanks for the assist.

Thanks Jord, but I think your data in your posting needs to be updated.
I tried to follow it, but some tabs are not there as identified.
I don't know enough to make jumps in logic to determine the appropriate course to follow. Your posting is four years old.

The last time I checked, Nouveau drivers didn't support CUDA or OpenCL. You need the drivers from Nvidia.

It's not my posting. It's that of another poster. And if no one says what should be changed in it, there's no change going to happen in that thread.

Update:

I found ...
http://askubuntu.com/questions/149206/how-to-install-nvidia-run

Implemented ...
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current

Driver Manager identifies nvidia-304

I rebooted, but still no GPU recognition at einstein.phys.uwm.edu

Einstein doesn't do the GPU recognition, Boinc on your host does that,

Try doing a sudo /etc/init.d/boinc-client restart or a sudo service boinc-client restart if that's what's used on your distro.

Then post the Boinc startup from the Event Log.

This appears to be a 64-bit BOINC bug and it is _most_ annoying. I have 3 machines running Mint 17.

One is a single core running 32-bit with one of the Gicky-Gnasty-Gnome desktops.
One is a Quad core running 64-bit with the other Gicky-Gnasty-Gnome desktop
One is a Six core running 64-bit KDE

Both the Quad and Six core have the exact same video card.

32-bit NVidia info:
Linux-x86
331.113

GeForce 210
16 CUDA cores
64-bit memory interface
Total memory 1024MB

A search on 32-bit for OpenCL (because I've come across many threads about it)

As you can see, on the machine running 32-bit software, all is well. The quad core has a sad tale to tell:

Quad core NVIDIA info:

A search for opencl on the Quad Core yields the following:

I conducted an experiment on my Six Core. I purged all things nvidia on the machine. Added the edgy PPA for xorg and installed 340 driver per the instructions found here: http://media-opensource.blogspot.com/2014/11/install-nvidia-34058-driver-in-linux.html

Still no joy.

Tell me Gandalf, which video card do you actually have? If we have two different video cards then this problem is specific to BOINC in the 64-bit Mint 17 repos. The 32-bit version is working just fine.

Regrettably, I don't think I can put this video card in the machine running 32-bit software. Too old to have that type of slot I believe.

If others have 64-bit Mint 17 working with nvidia-331, then, I will hazard a guess the problem is a stupid coding bug using a data type which can only go up to 255 so when my (and probably Gandalf's) cards returned numbers greater than 255 it bailed.

Right now those are my two ideas.

Saw an awful lot of posts on NVidia site and other places where Boinc has a known issue of looking for opencl in wrong spot with proprietary drivers which is why I did the directory listings. Need someone to confirm they have 64-bit working with nvidia 331 driver and some other lower CUDA count card to rule out the "looking in wrong place" issue.

Just scrolled back and saw Gandalf's card. Went here: http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-650/specifications and found it also has 384 CUDA cores.

Need someone with 64-bit Mint, nvidia 331 driver, and a CUDA core count < 255 to testify they have BOINC working.

Thanks

I scrounged through my pile of spare parts and found a Geforce 210 with 16 CUDA which would fit in the Quad Core. Put it in and booted. Nvidia identifies it as 16 CUDA, BOINC, however, has no love.

The Quad core has a lot of RAM so I don't want to put a 32-bit OS on it. If push comes to shove I could put in a scrap drive, take out the RAM and test the 384 CUDA with 32-bit OS, but, this really looks like a 64-bit BOINC bug.

If I get time tomorrow I will open up the single core machine and see if one of my 384 CUDA core cards "could" be put in it.

Going to start another thread now to see if _anyone_ has BOINC running on 64-bit Mint 17 (and whatever the corresponding Ubuntu version is) has CUDA being correctly identified.

First of all, to get OpenCL working put a symlink libOpenCL.so -> libOpenCL.so.1 in /usr/lib/$arch directories. This will work only if BOINC has managed to detect CUDA support.

As for CUDA. As far as I can tell BOINC has no trouble detecting CUDA support as long as your drivers are working correctly. 331 drivers appears to have been a rather buggy release. I have a vague recollection that some release required that you run one CUDA program as root to make it work for other users.

340 might be better release but I think I've seen people install nvidia-modprobe package with that.

340 did not work. I tested that on Six core using the PPA.

I have heard mention of "install nvidia-modprobe" but not seen instructions. It must be something built from source for installation because

sudo apt-get install nvidia-modprobe

finds nothing.

nvidia-modprobe is in trusty-backports. Either enable backports in Software sources or download the package from here or here. (Mint 17 = Ubuntu 14.04)

This bug report suggest it would (have) fix(ed) 331 drivers too.

Juha - if it doesn't work, how do I undo it?
Usually when I try new things that don't work, I end up having to reinstall LM.

I'm poking around at just how to do this on my Six Core. Checking the "backports" box on Software Sources and running sudo apt-get update does not pull in trusty-backports, at least with my system where all updates have been applied. It pulls in qiana/backport and nvidia-modprobe is not in the list of items.

Is it "safe" to force in trusty-backports once auto-updated to qiana?
If it is safe, how does one force trusty-backports in for amd64?

Just an FYI, I dropped the 384 CUDA Core card into the 32-bit box and BOINC is merrily consuming 84% of the CUDA Cores. Waiting for a couple of WU to finish on Quad Core, then wiping it and dropping it back to 32-bit KDE. Will have to pull 2Gig of RAM out of it.

Just want to prove once and for all this is a 64-bit only problem.

So Software sources isn't that nice tool. You can add it semi-manually by using this repository line:

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu trusty-backports main restricted universe multiverse

Or just download the package manually.

Gandalf, if you are not comfortable in trying and fixing things afterwards perhaps you'll want to wait for Roland's report.
