Not straight into core of this problem perhaps, but does that Samsung SSD have the latest firmware?

How have you set the "Leave non-GPU tasks in memory while suspended" option in Boinc Manager computation settings? How big chunk of the total RAM are the running/suspended tasks using in case they are in memory?

Hi,
I do have latest firmware yes. It does seem that fully uninstalling Boinc (and removing all related folders) and reinstalling has fixed the issue. No idea why. I had most settings default, and I definitely didn't touch that setting you mentioned, which is off. As you can see in the screenshot I posted, Boinc was using no RAM at all.

That's boincmge.exe, not boinc.exe and boinctray.exe and not the science tasks which may include virtual machine(s). Sometimes the VM's themselves won't stop even though the task they are running stops. I have also seen a science app, forget which project, that refused to stop because the author did not include a checkpoint method so the task could be stopped and restarted. It ran to end end even if the manager was quit.

The "Leave non-GPU tasks in memory while suspended" is important. Swapped onto disk the task or VM can't run. Also if in RAM that can mean the system can't find enough free buffer space to buffer the I/O to disk and has to fall back onto a slower method.

If it comes back you can look into Performance Monitor and click the disk tab, sort by i/o to see what process is using the disk.

Still down, methinks this could turn into a grand mal outrage.

Quite if the reports of a early crash are correct, that would have been about midnight local time. Which might just mean they are fighting more than the normal backup and purge cycle. If it isn't up after dinner than we will have concern that Eric may not be wishing his wife Happy Valentines on the boards.

...I just wait for the summary to come along

Someone went through Annies posting history, saw the word "elephant" and "eat" in the same comment. Thus, they put two and two together to add up to 5.328563, got triggered and sent an angry PM about extinction of animals or summut.

The end.

Nope, not there https://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=11835&postid=81356 but several other animals are mentioned as being on her diet, snail being one.

I haven't had monkey brains, but a friend claims to have had them.

Something I forgot to mention about the Yahoo situation is as a Moderator of a Yahoo Groups forum on house rabbits, I've been unable to resolve a huge issue regarding uploading pictures, and tech support is virtually non-existent or not helpful.

Yes. Big Problems. A few groups for moderators. Last one seems to have the most traffic. Good Luck.

Well, my land line, my internet, and my tv(via DirecTv) are all provided by AT&T. I just wonder how I will access my email if Yahoo gets out of the picture.
You and several million others. Just about everybody has or had a yahoo e-mail account. But if Oath can't monitize them ... they aren't going to keep them.

The Rumor is Oath is going to kill it, Yahoo that is.

Well, my isp is bellsouth.net, aka ATT, and they use the Yahoo interface. What's going to happen to me?

Maybe they will sell it off like they did their landlines to Frontier so they can double the price.

45 minutes of drive may not be a full charge. Might be only 1/2 charge. Suggest if you have a trickle charger, give it several hours of charge. Then get it tested at a shop. Lead Acid batteries really don't like 100% discharges unless they are built as deep cycle batteries. Might have taken a good chunk of lifetime off it.

On the contrary, I feel that greater efficiency can sometimes be achieved by running different projects together.

Pity we can't experiment with differnt schedulers, because we have one scheduler that fits everyone (guess what, it doesn't). Once, after WU supply problems (because network problems outside of my reach and unrelated project management difficulties, outside my reach too) the scheduler went into some kind of trottling mode and started running one project at a time (8 cores). To my surprise app from one paticular project went down from ~3.2h/WU to ~2.9h/WU.

After some thinking I've got to conclusion that there is one resource that all code/data is sharing. It is L2 cache.

What is good thing, I've just gave up on micro-managing (more like micro-massaging) the scheduler.

What human thinks of as an ideal schedule rarely is. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scheduling_(computing) The problem has had a lot of thought over time. Obviously you aren't too upset with the O/S's scheduler, but you don't see inside it either.

Without putting the code into something like valgrind and actually studying what is going on, perhaps best to simply leave it alone as there are an infinite number of way to make it slower and perhaps only zero ways to make it better.

BTW, Boinc is open source so if you with to put a different scheduler in, go right ahead.

As to sequential running, set it to run on one core, change the switch between tasks time to something bigger than the longest task a project sends. Your RAC will be low, but you have your answer. If you want you could run an instance of Boinc for each core with those settings and increase your RAC that way. You might even set each instance so it only gets work from one project. I believe there are enough switches to allow this, but I'll leave researching how to do this up to you.

Boinc did terrible things to my system. Because it made it warm it forced me to open the box and blow out the dust on a regular basis. Then it dried out the faulty electrolytic capacitors on the motherboard. Took about 4 years too. After that it was toast.

Oh, on the other system, the brand new one, it so stressed the CPU it failed. That 10 days out of box. I know it was responsible for that. Never mind Intel making a bad CPU. PS the replacement CPU has been going 5 years now.
