1) Message boards : Questions and problems : BOINC Mgr-BAM sync doesn't sync all my projects - just 6 out of 9 (Message 86637)

Hi,

I had a happy running system, but I had to change laptop. In my new laptop, I installed BoincMgr, (latest stable) sync'd with BAM, but only 6 of my 9 projects got sync'd. I've tried several times, even clicking on "attach to new host by default" several times in BAM site, but still only 6 out of 9.

Please help! thanks!

2) Message boards : BOINC Manager : how to disable automatic use of VirtualBox? (Message 77176)
Posted 5 Apr 2017 by Profile llagos
Post:
Hi. I installed VirtualBox yesterday, and today I noticed there is a VM named "boinc_something" in it... I assume Boinc Mgr detected VBox and started downloading VM for it.

How do I disable this behavior? I don't want BoincMgr to use VBox. Just normal tasks under BoincMgr. And of course, I won't uninstall VBox since I need it for my work.

Thanks!
3) Message boards : BOINC Manager : separate "usage limits" under "computing preferences" for "in use-inactive" (Message 75964)

Post:
Hi. I'd like to ask for an enhancement if possible for next/future versions.

In current version "Usage limits" is one and for all. However I'd like it to be separated in two, for "active computer" or "idle computer/screensaver".

This way, I could define something like:
- when in use, use 75% of CPUs && 50% of CPU time
- when not in use use 100% of CPUs && 100% of CPU time

The idea is that I can run boinc when i'm also working, with some restrictions that won't affect the type of work I do, but when in screensaver mode, I can let boinc run at full throttle.

Today, it's just nothing or all with the option to "suspend boinc when in use"...

Thanks!

Hi,

I'd like to split this settings, which currently applies globally.

The idea would be that I could tell Boinc to assign x% of CPU time while computer is in use, and a different Y% when computer is idle.

I have a computer with 4 COREs, so I'd like to assign 1 core (25%) when I'm using the PC, but 3 (75%) when not in use.

An even better option would be to have a check saying "use full CPUs when idle", and have only "usage limit" for "in use" case.

Something along that line, would be a very good thing to have.

At least, I'd use it :)

Thanks

Hi,

Recently I aborted all my tasks (all overdue since I was out for a week), and today I resumed Boinc. Tasks pane is empty, and I have plenty of CPU and RAM.

I enabled a few projects, but all I get is this message of "not needed", so I got no tasks to run...

Why this?

For instance, this one:

6/24/2014 1:28:03 PM | Constellation | Sending scheduler request: Requested by user.
6/24/2014 1:28:03 PM | Constellation | Not requesting tasks: don't need

How come I don't need, if I have none at all???

Post:
Hi,

In current lastest version of BOINC Manager, it's possible to assign a particular amount (%) of RAM when the computer is in use, and a different one when it's idle. that's good, and I think it should be the same when the computer is idle (or screensaver mode).

For instance, I have 50% cpu time assigned to boinc, but the computer goes idle, screensaver, etc., it could go higher!

Hope this makes it...

This feature was long ago requested as a "run until finish" feature.

This way, you could select a particular task, marked as "run until finish", and voila. You got what you want.

Of course, still waiting on that feature :(

Thanks... although, if that is the case, a more elegant solution would be to be fully 64bit complaint.

I've seen application that are labeled as "64bit" but underneath, they use 32libs and need those "compat-libs".

Post:
Hi,

I've downloaded latest ".sh" script to install Boinc on my CentOS 6.3 64bits. After running the script, I ran the manager script and get the following error:

[netcool@T410-llagos BOINC]$ ./run_manager
./boincmgr: error while loading shared libraries: libnotify.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
[netcool@T410-llagos BOINC]$

However, I do have libnotify installed:

[netcool@T410-llagos BOINC]$ rpm -ql libnotify
/usr/bin/notify-send
/usr/lib64/libnotify.so.1
/usr/lib64/libnotify.so.1.2.3
/usr/share/doc/libnotify-0.5.0
/usr/share/doc/libnotify-0.5.0/AUTHORS
/usr/share/doc/libnotify-0.5.0/COPYING
/usr/share/doc/libnotify-0.5.0/NEWS
[netcool@T410-llagos BOINC]$

So, I do a libnotify.so.1, just not a ".so.4", and according to some quick research, this is the latest version of libnotify (.so.4 is older).

Can Boinc run with this version of libnotify? Or do I need to "downgrade" my current up-to-date version of it?

Any idea what could be wrong?

Oh...!!!! Boinc manager is such a liar!!!!

I changed that from the default '0.00' to '75.00' and now it's running 3 tasks!

Thanks a lot...

anyway, I think the options should be renamed... it's confusing to have a 'run based on preferences' and a 'run always' which (at least for me) makes me believe that NONE of the preferences will be used for the 'always' option...

Hi. I just changed laptop to a new Lenovo T410, with an Intel i5 cpu. According to the intel webiste, it'a dual core, each core with hyper threading, so I expected Boinc Manager to run at least 2 tasks, if not 4.

On the contrary, it's only running one, with 25% CPU usage. About preferences, I have boinc with 'Run Always', so it should be performing better...

Maybe this problem is caused when I turn off my laptop. The "shutdown" signal frmo windows arrives to Boinc but Boinc takes too much time to finish all running tasks, so when the shutdown arrives, boinc hasn't finished, and it's killed (speaking in unix terms)...

I've been trying suspending all network/tasks just before shutdown, in order to let boinc nicely finish all work, and then shutdown. Seems to work, although it's a PITA having to do this manually all the time...

Hi.

Boinc Manager 6.10.58 on WVista. I've noticed lately that new tasks, after downloaded, are not shown in the Tasks tab. It's when they are "almost-ready" to start, that they show up in that tab with 0%.

Don't know why this. Is this a new feature of this version?

Anyway, I can't tell how many new tasks do I have...! I have to check under "Messages", and take a manual count comparing with the Tasks tab....! Awful!

So, why this? shouldn't boinc remove everything from a project when detaching from it?
