Message 60287 - Posted: 13 Feb 2015, 19:51:05 UTC

I haven't made any changes to my #1 computer that I'm aware of in the past week. And during that period BOINC has been crunching along using as much of my resources as I allowed. That changed this morning.

Now, with plenty of WU's waiting in the wings, I'm only running two units, while six cores and the GPU are loafing.

Any help? What happened?

Further digging: I find than not one of my cores is running at the allowed 100%. Two are working a little harder than the rest, but overall I'm using less than 25% of my horsepower.

What system? Which Boinc version. Which project? There aren't any crystal ball here.

Sorry about that.

It's a Dell Precision 490, dual quad core Xeon, 20GB.
BOINC Manager 7.4.36.

I've got SETI@home running, along with one unit from Climateprediction.

I've been away from the house for a few hours. No change in status. I've rebooted the system several times, no joy.

Looking at your host at Seti:

All tasks for computer 7334605

It has plenty of Cuda GPU tasks, but no CPU tasks left,

It also hasn't contacted the project since 14 Feb 2015, 1:23:02 UTC, over an hour ago,

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/hosts_user.php?userid=1994368

Looking at your host at CPDN:

http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/results.php?hostid=1354602

You have one recently completed task, one task in progress, one errored task, and six aborted tasks, and a 'Maximum daily WU quota per CPU' of '0/day',
stop aborting tasks, that lowers your allowance and makes it less likely the project will send you tasks.

and your host hasn't contacted the project in 19 hours:

http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/hosts_user.php?userid=138584

So what cache settings are you running? (both of them)

Well I'll be darned! That was the problem. I had both projects set to not accept new tasks. That was intentional in the case of the CPDN, but accidental on the part of SETI. The single CPDN task I have running is estimated to last another 13 days.

I'm crankin' now. I saw the list of tasks in queue but failed to notice they were all GPU tasks.

The reason I aborted the stacked CPDN tasks was that they were running to the exclusion of SETI. I know the program is supposed to even things out over time. I've seen a number of posts from others indicating this doesn't work so well in practice though.

I really appreciate your help. Such a simple thing, it makes me feel like a real dummy to have overlooked it.

Thanks

Rather than aborting them, just suspend them all but one, let only one run at once, they have really long deadlines,

Or use an app_config.xml to do that automatically:

Application configuration

<app_config>
<project_max_concurrent>1</project_max_concurrent>
</app_config>

Drop the file in the CPDN project directory, do a read config file, and Boinc will only run one CPDN task at a time.
