So I recently downloaded Boinc and since then I had massive problems with my WiFi, to the point where it is unusable. When I check my connections it shows that I have an average of 1000 active connections, I tried setting network usage limits and uninstalling Boinc, but nothing has worked so far. The only way to get my WiFi back so far has been to shutdown my PC. Please help :(

You're not supplied any real information:

When requesting help on these forums.

What OS? What Boinc version? What Router? What Wifi device? What Wifi version are you using? What frequency band are you using? What channels are you using? Are there neighbouring access points using the same channel? are you using 40MHz Bands or 20MHz Bands? Are your neighbours using 40MHz or 20MHz Bands?

Have you tried moving your Router to a different channel? on the 2.4GHz Frequency Band there are only three non-overlapping channels.

Sorry, I'm not very tech savy.

Windows 7 64
Boinc 7.4.36

Router http://www.broadcom.com/products/Broadband-Carrier-Access/xDSL-CPE-Solutions/BCM6362

Version I guess 802.11 b,g,n (?)

I'm using 20MHz bands and my neighbours are using both 20 and 40.

I was using channel 1, which I did share with one of my neighbours.
Changing the channel didn't have any effect.

BOINC by itself will open three connections, one on TCP port 80, one on TCP port 443 and one on TCP port 31416.
Ports 80 and 443 are used for communications with projects, port 31416 is used for RCP communication on the local network (127.0.0.1) between BOINC its parts.

You said:

If uninstalling BOINC does not matter, it's not BOINC that's doing this.

It could be a project that BOINC is running is doing this, but you omitted to say which projects you have.
Another thing that will open a massive amount of ports is a peer to peer file sharing program, such as uTorrent, Vuze, Bittorrent, Limeware, Kazaa, eMule, etc.
And of course, it could well be that your computer is infected with a virus, Trojan or other malware.

And which ones are allowed to fetch work?
Which ones have work?
How did you check that you had so many ports open?

What if you do the following:
- Start -> search cmd.exe (enter)
- In the command line window type netstat -n >> c:\temp\net1.txt (Enter)
- Use Windows Explorer to navigate to C:\temp\ and find net1.txt
- Open this with Notepad.
- Copy its contents and post them here (please leave all IP addresses intact).

You can do this twice:
Once after a computer reboot, with only BOINC open.
Once after having used the computer for a bit, and have your normal use of programs open. Second time rename the file to net2, as the command can't overwrite a file.

You can limit how much bandwidth BOINC uses for upload/download.
Advance mode > Tools > Computing preference.

I've had to set limits to downloads since my DSL (50K) easily gets saturated and reset, changing my IP address. This messed up Utorrent connections to some of my private torrent sites that only track IP addresses. Annoyingly that requires me to log back into the sites for seeding to continue.
