After a short while of computing inactivity (on my part) I get a Boinc message on my monitor that says, "Computing suspended while computer is inactive". Does this mean that it's stopped number crunching for Boinc? Explanation for a beginner would be much appreciated please!

That means you're not actively using the computer, so Boinc has suspended computation, probably caused by the following setting in your computing preferences:

Suspend work if no mouse/keyboard activity in last --- minutes
Needed to enter low-power mode on some computers

There is probably a value in there, try editing your preferences, and deleting that value.
