Why can Win7 and ATI GPU WUs work, but Linux and ATI GPU WUs not?
Projects reportedly can not see ATI GPUs, if the OS is Linux.

The are lots of different reasons why AMD GPU + Linux might not work when it comes to BOINC, starting from having open source drivers installed instead of the fglrx drivers from AMD.

Do you have any specific host and project in mind?

They all have the same issue. They recognize the Linux OS (Linux 3.5.0-17-generic), but not the ATI GPU. ATI website cannot/doesnot scan Linux for the best driver. However, Linux and NVIDIA do work together.

I will look into that idea and post what I find. Thanks for the suggestion.

Which Distro? There are dozens of them, Ubuntu, Debian, etc,

Where did you get Boinc from? Berkeley? or from that Distro's repository?

Does that distro have an AMD package for Boinc?

I have LinuxMint 64bit Cinnamon, if that is what you need.
I installed BOINC via Synaptic Package Manager.
When I select boinc-amd-opencl for install, I get a RED square.

Hope that helps you help me.

Edit: All my ATI GPU are 7770.
Should I install an ATI driver using WINE?

I found this and am now downloading it...
http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Linux+x86

Edit: No good with LinuxMint.

Tried this Win7 AMD driver via WINE. No joy.

Anyone have a better idea?

would this be a case of having to delay the start up of the boinc client for x amount of time to let all the drivers get loaded.

I have found the Linux reboots require...
sudo service boinc-client restart

at startup to get the GPUs working. This is not ATI specific. NV GPUs require it also.

it is doing the same as putting a delay in the boinc client start up.

Yea. I don't like it, but it works. It still doesn't get my ATI GPUs to work with LinuxMint.

I'll look into this "Backports" idea. Thanks

Installed the Backports package. Collatz still doesn't see my GPUs.
The AMD package under BOINC still gives me a RED square. Not good.

http://boinc.thesonntags.com/collatz/hosts_user.php
That url shows the hosts of the user looking at the link, in my case it shows my hosts at Collatz.

This is a better link just to show just my hosts:

http://boinc.thesonntags.com/collatz/hosts_user.php?userid=2223

and this is a better link to show just your hosts:

http://boinc.thesonntags.com/collatz/hosts_user.php?userid=47042

OK, guys. I got fed up and put two NV GPUs in the Linux PC.
At least it's working now.

Thanks for the support.

I wonder when Boinc will update their Manager in the distro packages?
I can't use the app_config file in the current package.

btw
you didn't get the 7770s from ebay did you, seems there is a poop load of amd gpus up for bids that are really good knock offs.
but not what they seem to be......

We had a report at GPUGrid of an NVidia knockoff sold through ebay, too.

A nice-looking GTX 650, apparently, but it reported compute capability 1.1 ...
