I'm running BOINC Manager 7.2.42 (x64) on Windows 7, and have a question about setting processor usage times.

A typical work day for me is:

00:00 - 07:59 = off duty
08:00 - 16:00 = on duty
16:01 - 23:59 = off duty

How would I instruct BOINC to run during the times intervals when I am off duty?

You can get to the preferences screen via "Tools | Computing preferences ..." and selecting the "processor usage" tab. Would the following work:

Every day between the hours of 00:00 and 07:59 (no restrictions if equal)
Day-of-week override: Mon 16:01 - 23:59
Day-of-week override: Tue 16:01 - 23:59
Day-of-week override: Wed 16:01 - 23:59
Day-of-week override: Thu 16:01 - 23:59
Day-of-week override: Fri 16:01 - 23:59
Day-of-week override: Sat 00:00 - 23:59
Day-of-week override: Sun 00:00 - 23:59

There does not seem to be a way of entering several time blocks. If I run BOINC during the AM hours then I cannot run during the PM hours, and vice versa. My machine has to be on anyway, and however you cut it, that's 8 hours of running the null process.

By the way, I know there is the "While computer is in use" check box, but I work in a very cramped space, and the crews from the other shifts bump into my keyboard and mouse all night long. I just want to have BOINC run regardless of their clumsiness.

Thanks,

John

You could set the Activity menu to 'Run always' for when you're offduty.

I'm not familiar with the time of day settings as I have not used them, but chances are you could probably run BOINC all the time (except for most GPU projects) and not even notice that it's running.

If that's not acceptable for some reason, you can change the "'In use' means mouse/keyboard activity in last" setting to 1 minute, that's what I have the GPU pause on my hosts set to.

Another suggestion would be to use the BOINC command line tool (boinccmd). You'll need one to enable processing and one to disable it. Use cron (Linux) or task scheduler (Windows) to run it at the times you want.

I have a similar problem. I don't want any project running between 13:00 and 20:00 weekdays. I'm also new to Linux so I'm not sure how to set up Cron. Can someone tell me what to enter and how to do it?

@John Hom, Dwendl

Try swapping around the start and end times: For John, Mon-Fri override 16:00-08:00 and for Dwendl, Mon-Fri override 20:00-13:00. Leave the not-override at 00:00-00:00.
