Windows 64-bit BOINC version 7.2.33 just crashed during setup on Win 8.1 - it could not find the correct "BOINC.msi" installation file. I searched the computer and located 3 possible locations, but to no avail. Finally had to cancel the install, BUT it also took out the previous installation! Had to do a system restore to get it back, which opened another can of worms, because I'd just finished doing major cleanups and defrag on the system - aaaaargh!!! BEWARE!!!

To explain: there is no problem with the v7.2.33 copy of boinc.msi

But what the BOINC installer does is to UNinstall the previous version of BOINC, and for that to work, it needs access to the previous boinc.msi - which Windows should have cached on your computer. The FAQ gives various ways of recovering the missing msi, or working round the problems caused by it being missing.

Thanks for the heads up. I've been running Boinc on several computers for many years, and never had a problem like this. Even the former version installed fine on this 8.1 box, so I wrongly concluded there may be a glitch in the new version.
There have been a few glitches with other apps and Win 8.0 & 8.1 - I'll check out the FAQ page for future reference. In the meantime, I'll stick with the previous version. On the bright side, this thread may be of help to someone else in a similar situation. Thanks again!

My problem with BOINC v7.2.33 is that the keyboard locks-up and the computer just goes full bore. The computing preferences I selected do not kick-in. In fact BOINC self-selects full control of computing. Is it BOINC or is it the upgrade to Windows 8.1? Is anyone else getting this problem?

Have not seen that issue under Windows 8.1 x64, but BOINC Manager won't start under a non-Admin Win8.1 logon. Believe I had done (as an admin): net localgroup boinc_admins {desired-non-admin-acct} /add, but maybe the update to Win 8.1 undid that. The tricky point about getting the user added is that one must Start, Windows System, rt-clk Command Prompt, Run as administrator. It is Not sufficient to Runas /user:{admin-acct} cmd.exe.

After getting the user added, it may be necessary to reboot, since BOINC Manager still hangs 'retrieving current status', after adding the user.

A different thread, that may be helpful: http://superuser.com/questions/125966/boinc-permissions-issue-running-as-non-admin-on-windows-pc
